Medicaid Question--New to this

My son qualified for an intergrated Kindergarten program in our school district. During the meeting they mentioned getting him on Medicaid, I am confused with that. What exactly does it do? We already have insurance. He gets a check from my late husbands social security. Will this interfere with any of that?

Medicaid Question--New to this

Go the OWPDD website and they can walk you through the process. You first have to get a TABS number and once that is established you get about $1000 to use per year towards services for your child. You can also get a medicaid waiver but that is much harder to obtain and you need significant disabilities. I know my DD won't qualify so I never applied but I do know it's a long paperwork process but if you do qualify you basically work through a coordinator and you get almost everything you need, therapies, respite, etc. This is way oversimplifying it and I tell most of my parents in my district to contact Parent to Parent and they hand hold you through the process. I don't think social security will have any bearing on getting or not getting the waiver. It's more about the disability.

Medicaid Question--New to this

I work as a Medicaid service coordinator. Your first step is calling 631-434-6000. state that you would like to obtain Medicaid. OPWDD in the long island region will assign you a case manager and schedule for something that is very new to obtaining services called the front door. Please feel free to contact me and I can walk you through the process.

Re: Medicaid Question--New to this

Were they asking you to fill out a form? If so, I am thinking it is for Medicaid reimbursement for the school district if your child qualifies. It doesn't do or change anything for you, it just means that the district is reimbursed by them for some portion of services if the child receives Medicaid. My district asks everyone to sign it at each CSE so they have it on file in case the child receives or begins to receive.

FYI: I'm a special ed. teacher.
