Unique situation..need guidance

So we are "fostering" an english bull dog.

Long story short my cousin bought him 3 years ago from a reputable breeder. He is AKC certified and very well taken care of but my cousin is a cop and his work schedule is crazy. His fiance also works and is pregnant and he felt bad because he cannot give the dog the time or attention he needs so he asked if we could take him and we did.

Here's where the unique situation comes in and please no flames or negative comments. We are technically not allowed to have dogs in my building although we did previously have a dog (we had to go to court and fight to keep him). We had to put him down 3 years ago because he had heart diseaseChat Icon

We are in the process of looking for a house..we plan to move by the end of the year provided we find a house etc. My parents volunteered to stay with him overnight so basically they will bring him here every morning he will stay here during the day since my sister works from home at my place and we would walk him feed him play with him, etc but he will go to my parents at night. This is to avoid getting in trouble with our coop however, he is our dog just not living full time with us until we move KWIm?...I know it's weird but unfortunatley it's our situation right now.

He's a great dog and has already taken to us...we just got him on Saturday so we haven't even had him two days. We are in love with him.

I'm doing lots of research on how to go about this. I read about a 2 week shutdown which I can do here to let him know we are his masters etc. Our previous dog was so spoiled and it backfired on us at the end and I don't want that to happen with him. He's already been introduced to my parents and sister though...what do you think is the right way to go about this?

BTW my parents didn't want to adopt him full time because they just had to put their dog to sleep 3 weeks ago and they are still really upset. I think they feel like taking the responsibility of another dog is betraying their dog but they are more than happy to have him stay overnight.

Any suggestions, tips, advice?

what is a shutdown? to show an animal you are in control is about setting boundaries and teaching him what is allowed and not allowed, behaving as if you are the leader of his pack. Dogs are pack animals.

You would need to teach the basic, sit, stay, come, go to your spot, he should sit wait when you are placing his food/water bowl. that will help him know you are the leader

I believe a shutdown is when you introduce your animal into the house and for 2 weeks don't introduce anyone other than immediate family members..kind of to give the dog a chance to adjust and to get used to you being the pack leader..someone correct me if I'm wrong.

So far he's been doing good..he already knows sit, come, stay, etc and he is fully housebroken. We have been walking him on a leash either behind us or right next to us and we go in and out of doors before him.

He's been doing good so far and we are in love. Chat Icon
