UPDATE: I told my boss today...opinions please...

Hi All,

I work for a family company that is fairly large, but I work directly for the owners, who are a little old school and very judgmental of people. I have had a fairly great working relationship with them to date. There is a main boss that I report to who is on vacation and another one that is going on vacation next week. I decided that since I'm 14 weeks now, by the time they come back in september, I might be showing a lot more and I decided to tell the one that is in the office today....first let me tell you some minor details about myself....I was married, divorced now with no children....I started dating a guy last May and he and I are having the baby together, now over a year later, with plans of marrying next year once everything settles down after the baby comes.....When I initially went through my divorce, my office was generally supportive, and I REALLY TRY not to bring ANY personal things into the office, but they aware of what was going on. I have to say that one of them became a bit judgemental and really started to give me a hard time in general about everything but I knew it stemmed from that. I eventually had to confront him and the situation and once I did, it all went away and everything has been fine.

So I have been a bit nervous to tell them mainly for this reason.

So the conversation today involved me telling him I am pregnant and I explained I was returning to work after the baby. He gave me a hug, he is happy, etc...and then he said "As your friend I feel I can say this to you, but my suggestion is to keep this quiet, don't tell too many people".....

HOW WOULD YOU TAKE THAT?

My initial reaction was shock and I REALLY think it stems from that I work for the owner, he is all about image and here is his unmarried pregnant assistant pregnant......

At the end of the day, I work to LIVE not LIVE TO WORK...so this is a means to and end for me and I don't care what anyone really thinks...however now I'm am aboslute nervous wreck to tell my MAIN BOSS when he returns from vacation....

THOUGHTS? How you would feel ? What would your feelings be?

There are some old school by the book people out there. Everyone has an opinion about something and if they're judgmental so be it. I'm sure you and your bf are very happy and excited, with good reason. Don't let anybody take that from you.

And if you're worried about your job they need to walk a very, very fine line with that and discrimination.

I would still tell your main boss. I think maybe he thinks people are going to think things and is trying to protect you on a way. No matter what you do in life though, people will think things so I say just ignore the idiots and be proud of yourself

What the effff is that supposed to mean??? Soon it will be obvious to everyone that you're pregnant! That is just a bizarre comment. It's 2014, who cares if you're not married. I can't believe someone would have the nerve to actually say this to you, even if it's how they feel.

I have NO idea what that means? It's not like it's something you can keep a secret for very long and who cares that you're not marrried? What are you gonna be 9 months and not telling anyone? I would just keep doing my job; and wouldn't worry about the office politics if that's what he's trying to protect you from?

It means don't tell people you and unmarried whore having sex out of wedlock. It means you don't want to embarrass yourself by telling people you are prego and not married.

That's what it means.

So what would he suggest? You just wear baggy clothes and let people think you are just packing on the pounds?

Or should you go away to a convent to hide until the baby is born to avoid shame like they did in the 1940s?

So, I told one other person at work, one of the Sr. VP's who I work closely with and he looked STUNNED.....and his first comment was "What are you going to do"

And I said "what does that mean"

and he said "get married?"

WTF IS WITH EVERYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
