What do I wear for this?
I am meeting with someone who graciously offered to give me advice on how to break into a field I am trying to transition into. It's not a job interview or anything. I don't want to dress like a slob, but I also don't want to dress like I'm trying too hard. Should I go business casual? Jeans and a nice top? I work as a substitute in an elementary school right now, so would my work attire be ok for something like this or too much?

Definitely never jeans.
I would do black pants and a nice button down blouse.
Still work appropriate but not a suit.
You could also wear a blazer too.

Thanks ladies! Like I said it wasn't an interview, I guess it's more of a "mentoring" meeting, so I didn't want to be over or under dressed.

I also look at it as always be prepared of who you might meet....she may introduce you to the CEO....or even have some kind of break-in position available and will want you to talk to the dept head about it.
Good luck!!!

Re: What do I wear for this?
Where is the meeting? If it's in the office, then I'd wear office attire... whatever is the norm there in that particular office or industry. If it's business casual, then I'd wear that. If you are trying to break into a field where more creative or casual dress is the norm, then I'd wear that. I'd want to mirror the attire of the people working there that I may be meeting and seeing.
(If it were a formal interview, then I think a suit is almost always the way to go.)
Of course, if you are meeting your "mentor" in the park to go for a run, or playing golf or something, of course I'd wear attire suited for that activity. But I assume you would've mentioned that if that were the case! LOL.

The meeting is at my alma mater. We would be grabbing coffee. So I'll definitely go with business casual. I just didn't want to come across as too eager, which a business suit (which is my go-to for all interviews) may convey.
Thanks everyone!
