Car seat question
This is might be a dumb question.
But what exactly is a convertible car seat? My understanding is it be used for an infant as well as an older child but doesn't "click in" like an infant car seat does.
Well need a car seat in three cars so I'm wondering what my best option is.
I was thinking 1 infant seat, 1 additional infant base to share between me and my mom and a convertible car seat for my husband's car.

Car seat question
you must start with an infant seat...this includes the car seat and the base. the base stays in the car and you click and unclick the seat. you only need one seat and multiple bases.
once the baby outgrowns the infant seat you'll need a convertible seat. they are usually 3-in-1s. rear facing, forward facing and booster.
rear facing should be until the baby is 2. then forward facing until the kid is about 45lbs-ish and meet the requirements. then you remove the 5-pt harness and use the booster portion which uses the car's seatbelt

Car seat question
You can use a convertible from the start. We had the graco my size 70 and I think it starts at something like 5 pounds and comes with inserts for smaller babies. Many people use them with newborns, the biggest draw back imo is that you can't leave the baby in the seat when you get where you're going. I love the convenience of not waking a sleeping baby when we get somewhere and also not worrying about them getting cold in winter, and simply not having to carry them in your arms. I'd rather be able to set the infant seat down to unlock the front door, etc. I do think your plan sounds fine though, especially if you won't have the baby in your husband's car that often. We only had the infant seat with one base when DD little and it worked for us but she was pretty much always with me.

You don't need to start with an infant seat w/ base but it is more convenient. Convertible seats can be used from 5lbs up.
OP - we just got an infant seat and 3 bases - 1 for each of our cars and 1 for my mom and sister since they were watching DD for the first 6 months.

A lot of hospitals won't release you with a convertible car seat. They require an infant seat, that maybe what PP meant

and IMO an infant seat is safer for the infant. and definitely more convenient for the mom

When I delivered DS they didn't ask what car seat I had, so I don't think having a convertible would have been an issue at all.
As for an infant seat being safer for an infant - that's inaccurate. If a convertible wasn't safe for an infant, then it wouldn't be approved for them. I know plenty of people who went straight to a convertible for financial reasons.
That all being said, infants sleep a lot and often fall asleep in the car. It's MUCH easier to take them in and out of the car just unsnapping the whole seat, rather than having to take the sleeping baby out of the car seat.

Car seat question
Thanks everyone! Maybe it's worth just getting two additional bases and worrying about the convertible later.

We didn't register for a Convertible since we knew it would be several months, if not a year before we'd get to use it and they do have expiration dates. It actually worked out for us b/c the convertible that we will end up buying wasn't even on the market until after DD was even born!

This is not true. A hospital only requires they be in an appropriate seat. So unless you dc is less than the min weight of the convertibles then the hospital will not have an issue.
