When do you Winterize sprinklers?

Yesterday I discovered a hole in one of my lines. I called around for someone to fix it and the first company who just called back asked if I was ready to winterize. I honestly have no clue what I'm doing and DH is uselessChat Icon I told her I thought we should wait until November and she said oh no people start in September. She said if I winterize they would just fix the line in the spring.
Advice please. Should I just Winterize now and worry about the line in the spring. Seems cheaper, but want to do the right thing.
The landscapers fertilized and spot seeded almost a month ago.

ETA: They want to charge $98 for service call + parts.
Winterize is $69 + tax.

Re: When do you Winterize sprinklers?

We'll probably turn off our sprinklers and blow them out in a couple of weeks. We'll do them ourselves. I don't think it's too early to do them now.

MY theory on things that could freeze is that in needs to be done by Thanksgiving.

We do ours ourselves and usually have it done the beginning of November.

When do you Winterize sprinklers?

My sprinkler guys schedules blow outs on his own time. We get a card in the mail that tells us when he'll be in our area. My shut off will be November 5th.

Re: When do you Winterize sprinklers?

We already winterized the lines two weeks ago. You want to do it before the weather turns to below 30 degrees. It was already 36 degrees,as a low last week so yes, get it done soon. If there is water in the line then the pipes can freeze and then burst causing a hole in the line. They fix things in the spring because it is easier to dig in the ground after it thaws out. We paid $75 to have a company winterized our lines and that included the taxes.

Thanks girls. I just spoke to my landscaper. He says his guys can fix the line. Says they have to do another application and to call him to winterize in a couple of weeks. I know the previous homeowners didn't use him though to winterize so I'm wondering if I should've just gone with an irrigation company. I'm so confused. I wish DH would take care of this stuff but that's a post for the relationship board Chat Icon

we do it in november- it's about $60-65 including tax. Ground temp matters more than air temp. The ground temp won't get too low until November. A few really cold nights will affect the ground temp.

our service calls are i think $75 then parts.

Thanks! Yeah I think this company was a little pricey. I cancelled. Went with the landscaper for now to fix it sometime this week. I think I'll definitely find an irrigation company for closing and opening though. I tried McCormack who I know is recommended on here. Called twice and still waiting to hear back.

You don't need to have an irrigation company do it. It is probably one of the easiest things to do. So if your landscaper is cheap I would continue to go with them.

For those who do it themselves, what needs to be done? What equipment is needed? An air hose? If it's easy, I'd be interested in knowing how. I am in charge of getting the system turned on and off each year. It costs a lot more out east where they think everyone here is made of gold.

yeah i've had friends do it before- i think all you need is an air compressor? We open it ourselves and its just turning the water on (except if there are issues). Closing I get nervous because i dont want to freeze a line :-/

November... there is a company that sends us a card in the mail that does it for around $50. Otherwise the past few years, my father just came over with his air compressor and did it for us (DH is not handy at all lol)
