Is donating meds legal?
So I know this may sound like a stupid and/or paranoid question, but is donating leftover fertility meds on this board legal? I see it quite frequently and always wondered about it. I have a bunch from my 1st IVF cycle and am currently 14 weeks pregnant. Most will expire within a year or so and I don't foresee needing them before then. I'm asking because these are prescription drugs and are controlled substances. What happens if I donate the meds to someone in need, something happens to them because of the drugs, and I'm the person who supplied them? Am I better off just taking them back to my RE office and having them give them to those in need? Thanks!

I've had the same concern. I would love to donate them to girls on here in need, but your right, they are prescription drugs. I am holding on to mine in case my SIL needs them. She's starting the IUI cycles now. Otherwise I think I am going to donate them back to the RE office.

Thanks for responding. I felt like a "dork" asking that question but always thought about it. I think I'll just take them back to my RE office and have them give them out to patients with no drug coverage.

I thought the same thing. I agree with your concerns. Although I do think it's amazing meds can be donated to girls we "know" that are oop

Technically it is because they are prescription drugs and meant for that person,BUT a lot of women are OOP so donations do help(I was one of those women my last fresh cycle). I have donated as well once I had my BFP last year. At the same time you can also if you're that concerned donate them to your RE office who will distribute them to those women who are OOP(I've given them to the office as well).

its also technically illegal for a dr office to give meds donated from one pt to the next, but they do

I thought the same thing. But it makes me feel good knowing I helped someone personally on this board. Do the meds from RE really get donated to those out of pocket?

I always wondered this samething. Unless, if you truly feel uncomfortable I wonder if you could drop them off at the RE's office and then tell the person who needs them where you brought them. Maybe as long as the girl uses the same practice this would work? Not sure!

I have donated and also received a donation. I just make sure the person is legit first. I would only donate to someone I have seen on this board for a long time and "know." Donating to my REs office this time wasn't an option since I wasn't going to be in the city. Also I wonder who they really give the meds to.

That's why we donate instead of sell. Then we would be drug dealing.

I have been given meds from the RE office some from pt who donated to them and some from reps.
I have given the RE extra meds.
