First Mammo

My ob gyn recommended I get one done as a preventive.

I went today to the center across from LIJ and was very impressed with my care.

It didn't hurt at all and the tech made me feel very at ease.

Also, I had originally been told to go to Zwanger which charges out of pocket for the 3d machine, which LIJ did not.

My appt was also scheduled for 8:10 and I was out of there by 8:30.

Now I'm just nervous for the results but I know that is normal.

Just thought I would share in case anyone needs to go.

Ask if you have dense breast tissue. I think by law that they have to tell you if you do now, but they may not. It's harder to detect lumps in dense tissue. My cancer was missed for years because my small breasts have dense tissue. Just knowing what you have is helpful in monitoring your health. I'm surprised it didn't hurt as usually having one's breasts firmly compressed enough to get a complete picture is not comfortable at all. I nearly fainted at the first place I went to, it hurt so badly.

If any questionable areas ever show up, ask to have a sonogram also as they see through dense tissue better.

Most likely you will be fine. Good for you for having it done.

Some insurances pay for the 3D, some don't at Zwanger. Mine did fortunately. I agree, it hurt a bit, they were being smooshed like in a panini maker! I liked that my results were available online within a matter of hours there. Mine too said dense breasts. Has anyone ever had one that didn't say that out curiousity? I feel like it's a CYA term for some reason, since it seems every thread I read about mammos say this.

Re: First Mammo

The tech told me the nurse will call me on Monday and it is common to be asked to come back so not to freak out.

In the past I've been told I've had "cystic" breasts.

When I was in college I came down with some kind of infection/fever which they said was related.

In any event, my ob gyn said she likes to maintain close follow up because of how common it is and where we live seems to be an environment to grow breast cancer.

Re: First Mammo

Got a call back for calcium deposits.

I googled of course which shows it could be something or could be nothing....

She said since this is my first, they have no baseline to compare it to....

I'm going in on Friday for their first appt.

I received a letter stating I have dense tissue. Good to know though. TY.

And I went to the place by LIJ, too, and although my time there was over 2 hours, it was as pleasant as a mammo could be.

Zwanger does not charge OOP. They submit it to your insurance but many do not cover it. If insurance does not cover it then the cost is $75.

Re: First Mammo

So I was there for almost 3 hours this morning.
They did more images as well as a ultrasound.

I met with the doctor and he wants to see me in another 6 months.

They saw some cysts and again the calcium but want to see if there are any changes.

It sounds like it's probably nothing.

I've had the same thing happen - go every 6 months just to keep an eye on things. Nothing ever came of it. I think they just llike to be extra cautious.
