Going solar?
We got an estimate to have solar shingles put on our roof. It will not cost us anything to do this except $40 per month for 20 yrs. he said our electric bill will be cut in half, but adding this 40 it will be cut by 1/4. If we decide to sell the house before the 20 yrs. either the new owner has to agree to continue payments or we have to still pay. I am 66 and my husband is 71. We aren't sure if this is worth it. It is being done by Dow. Anyone have solar? Is it worth it? Thanks,

I would not agree to lease them. Either buy them straight out or don't buy them.
We have solar panels and our electric bill has never been more than $12. However, the previous owners installed them, and if I had to agree to take over lease payments, I would've reduced my offer to them by the same amount.

I would skip it. My parents were also in the same boat both 69 they even said given there age not worth it. We did our in September we bought them. Yes the system is not cheap we have 44 panels $42,000 but the company got some of our rebates in 15 years it will be paid off.

Thanks for your responses. I think we will pass. As much as I'd like to save $ on my electric bill, I've just had doubts. Thanks for helping me finalize my decision. And at this stage of our lives we can't afford to spend a lot of $ out of pocket to buy them outright.

I would not buy a house that had an existing lease for solar panels. It was the seller's choice to buy them, it should be the seller's obligation to pay them off.

I decided not to get solar panels for my house, but I'm just curious, why would this dissuade you from buying a house? If you're saving money on the electric bill anyway, why would this bother you? Or do you just not like solar panels for a different reason? It seemed like you wouldn't want the panels just because you don't want to have to pay for the lease.

Going solar?
We are planning on selling our house and for this purpose passed on leasing the panels. I've been told they scare off buyers as most buyers don't want to take over the responsibility of a lease.

Because I am not going to assume a contract with a vendor I didn't pick, I didn't investigate, solar technology I didn't pick out.
Solar is a technology I think is going to evolve quickly. All the people that installed panels now it's great they are saving money. 5 years from now or even as soon as two years from now panels will be better, will generate more electric, will probably look less overbearing, and will be cheaper. If I put solar in two years from now I will probably have better system than the people who put solar in now.
I am definitely not going to be locked into a specific panel for 20 years.
