First Dining Room Set

Early 2015 I want to start looking for our first new dining room set. We've had a hand me down set that has worked for the past 4 years...but it's time for an upgrade. We have a 4 mo DD now and not looking to get something too nice as it will get pretty beat up I imagine. Any ideas, suggestions on where to look and what to look for? Or even what questions I should be asking myself to find the right set.

TIA!

We bought our current set used on craigslist. It's fairly high quality, it was in very gently used condition and it was a fraction of the price of something comparable brand new.

We bought a nice set from Raymour & Flannigan, and we have a 2 year old with another on the way. We treated the chairs with stain resistant spray and bought a piece of glass to sit on top of the table to protect it while they are young.

Re: First Dining Room Set

Is your current set so beat up that you really need a new set? If you think that your new set is going to get beat up too, I personally would wait two years and get something nice then.

First set is a bit small and kinda beat up. Would like a nice, new set to start dressing up our house a little. Past 4 years I just feel we've been living in an apartment and want to start changing that little by little. Also would like a new, clean place for family dinners since we barely use the dining table for what it is made for....to eat!

Honestly with kids I would go to bobs or IKEA. Don't be an idiot like me and buy an expensive set with cream cushions (we also have cream fabric couches in the living room), needless to say, I walk around with the can of scotch gaurd in my pocket.

Also, a tip I have is buying chairs that are all wood or that can be easily reupholstered... Check if you can unscrew the cushion yourself, if so, and if they get stained, you can simply buy some fabric and reupholster yourself by stapling it to cushion and reattaching the seat. We did that a few times with our old set, it's a quick and inexpensive fix to stains and rips.

This is a great tip! Thank you!!!

Figured I would go somewhat inexpensive...but still wanted it to be sturdy. Bob's was on my list and anything that could be on sale with Raymour & Flanigan or Ashley. I'd even check out Macy's clearance center but sometimes those are still too expensive.

First Dining Room Set

I bought my table and some of the chairs from World Market (online). Its solid wood. We use our dining room daily and do not have a kitchen table. Its not formal but formal enough that its nice for holiday dinners etc. I am not a fan of sets cause I am not a matchy matchy person.

I have a "china cabinet" that I got at Home Goods and does not match the table and chairs at all but it all goes together just fine. Two of my chairs I bought at Target and they are upholstered. they were 149 for a set of 2 (I do not let DS sit in them) and if they get dirty they can be replaced since they were not expensive.

My entire dining room (table 6 chairs, china cabinet and a side buffet type table was less than $1300).
