IUI at 24hrs or 36hrs after Trigger Shot?

I was at my RE today (Tuesday) after finishing 5 days of clomid in preparation for IUI. I was told to come back on Wednesday and to bring the trigger shot because if things progress as they seem to be they'll give it to me on Wednesday morning and then do IUI Thursday morning.
Now this is where I need questions answered. That would be 24 hours after the shot but everyone seems to always say 36 hours. Should I be questioning this with my RE?

ETA: I decided to call my RE and was informed that they MAY do it as early as Thursday morning, it would all depend on what comes about at my Wednesday appointment. I thought that I was 100% having it in 24 hours. She said it's likely I will based on where I am at but not definite.

Still interested to know who had success and at 24 or 36 hours???

ETA #2: This morning my leading follicle was only at 19.5, Dr. had expected it to be 20 by then. so the plan now is that I will now do the trigger shot myself at 10pm tonight and IUI is scheduled for Saturday morning, so I'm closer to 36 hours. It'll actually be 34 hours.

i wonder about this too sometimes. they say that you ovulate 36 hours after the shot, but everyone's body is different so its hard for me to believe that everyone will automatically ovulate exactly 36 hours before the shot. I'm not Dr. this is just my opinion. When we were trying for my DD, i also took the Clomid starting Day 3 and then when the follicles were ready, i did the Ovidrel and came back the next day, about 24 hours later. That is how we conceived our daughter. Now that we are trying for #2, we had to switch practices since the RE we were going to before, which i LOVED (RMA of NY) no longer accepted our insurance, we are now at LI IVF and the RE there does them 36 hours after the Ovidrel. I honestly think that sometimes, the reason i don't get pregnant is because its too late and I already ovulated.
Granted, I know that sperm can live in the body for 72 hours, but if you already ovulated much before, then you missed your shot. Again, I'm no Dr, so this is just my opinion.
Our first RE always said to do the IUI 24 hours after the shot because you want the sperm already in your body to meet the egg once it releases. It gives better chances. and it did work for us. We'll see this time.

Thank you so much for your response. I already feel better. It totally makes sense that the sperm would "be there" if done at 24 hours, but I am then afraid that if I don't ovulate till 36 hours that they may die before I ovulate. I definitely feel better hearing that you had success at 24 hours. This is my first IUI and being that we have zero insurance for infertility I really need this to work!
I plan to BD after the IUI (to help it out if needed) but DH may have a motility issue so the IUI is our best bet!

Re: IUI at 24hrs or 36hrs after Trigger Shot?

I did IUI's at 24 and 36 hours past ovulation and got pregnant both times. I am actually going in to get checked again tomorrow and if I am ready I will trigger tomorrow night and go in on Thursday. I think I remember RE telling me that the sperm can live for quite a while and the egg is good for 24 hours after ovulation. Hopefully we will both get out BFP's!! Chat Icon

If everything is timed properly, and you are not surging on your own, you will actually O closer to 40 hours after your trigger. That is why IVF retrieval is done at 36 hours post trigger - to get the most fertile eggs possible before they release on their own.

So if you're already surging, maybe an IUI at 24 hours would be more optimal for you. Otherwise, 36 hours is probably better.

Both of my successful IUIs were done at 36 hours post-trigger.

I have done both, with both BFNs... when I did get pregnant from an IUI, it was done about 27 hours after trigger.

I have done IUI's at either 36 hours post shot OR 12 hours AND 36 hours post shot (b2b) with lots of BFN's. The cycle we got a BFP, we Chat Icon 12 hours post shot and IUI 36 hours post shot. DH likes to think it happened at home, I believe it was the IUI.
