Child care class

Anyone taking a child are course?

DH and I gave very minimal experience with babies. Starting to regret my "dont do diapers" babysitting rule in High School.

We are taking a hospital course that covers child are basics, but it's only 3 hours and covers hospital procedures, labor, c-sections, and the tour as well, so how much basic care can their be?

Any suggestions for a basic child are course?

We took ours at LIJ New Hyde Park. There we about forty people in the class and we were all pretty clueless when it came to diapers, bathing the baby, taking care of the umbilical cord etc. it came in handy for both my husband and I.

I never even took one. The pediatrician at the hospital had to show me how to do the diapers because I put them on the baby backwards Chat Icon after that everything just fell into place Chat Icon

Honestly, once that baby is in your arms it will all kick in. You're in the hospital for at least a couple do days and the nurses will help you so much if you want/need. No class can truly prepare you. I promise you will be fine...not fine...great!

Baby center has awesome videos that are a few minutes long. How to swaddle, how to diaper, how to bathe, how to burp etc... They were so awesome and informative and b/c they are not too long you can watch them a few times and it's not annoying.

I never held a baby or did diapers or anything else until I had my ds. I can honestly say it comes naturally. I never thought it would because I'm not a motherly type person. But it really does. I don't think a class can really teach you as it's just something natural

I signed up for a few classes through the hospital I'll be delivering at, LIJ Katz in New Hyde Park. I signed up for a one day, 8 hour Lamaze/Childbirth/Labor Prep class (includes tour of labor and delivery, check-in process, etc.), a 3 hour Baby Care Basics (diapering, feeding, bathing, safety, etc.), and a 2 hour Breastfeeding class. While I have a lot of experience with babies, DH doesn't so as much as the classes are for me (especially the breastfeeding one since I've never done it and am pretty clueless with lots of questions), they're for him to get more comfortable and feel more knowledgeable. I thought the classes were reasonably priced and when you registered for two, you got the breastfeeding one for free.

Thanks for all the advice. Does make me feel a little better. I'd still like to find a class. Southside only has the one I'm taking and a breast feeding class I'm taking, both free though.

Anyone have a class not attached to the hospital they are birthing at?

The hospital will also show you if u want. Dh never held a baby, fed or changed a diaper. He jumped right in and was fine. And that's a dad. Moms have mothers intuition. ;)

We took one at a North Shore. It was ehhh. I got more out of books. The only advice I remember from the class is when washing baby, use washcloth on cleanest part of baby first and of dirty gross parts last if using same washcloth. So do privates last. Oh and make guests put purses high in a closet so baby can't get in and find and ingest meds.

I didn't take a class but I did read some info in books. One of them I picked up was called "heading home with your newborn". I had zero experience with diapers but once the baby was here, it was fine... you will be too!

Totally!!

But, you will have a couple of questions and that's normal -- the best people to ask?? The nurses in the hospital. I made sure to get the ear of some of the nice ones and they were THE BEST at showing me the most efficient burping techniques, and the bathing, and the feeding, etc. etc. etc. I felt like I had the most valuable crash-course EVER during my hospital stay. I'll never forget those nurses!!!

They taught my husband in the hospital after LO was born. We took the child caring class and honestly we thought it was a HUGE waste of time.
