Pap every 3 years if normal...
So I know the new guidelines are that if you had a normal pap, you don't need another one for another 3 years. I went to my gyno today and told her that my insurance would cover it yearly. She said they have to follow the guidelines/protocol even if my insurance would cover it. So I didn't get the pap, but I wanted it.
Has anyone tried to get their gyno to do a pap test yearly even if they had a normal result last time? I just feel like 3 years is a long time and so much can happen.

That's ridiculous! I never had an abnormal pap so in 2012, I didn't get one. In 2013, I needed one to move forward with ivf. Needless to say, I had my first abnormal pap at 31. If my Obgyn would not agree to give it to me every year, I'd look into a new one.

I just went and was told I didn't need one this year, it's not needed every year. I told dr I wanted one and she said that was okay but she just had to mention it to me. So I ended up getting one. I refuse to not have one done yearly, given my history. Every three years sounds long to me.

from what I know its not needed every year unless you have had an abnormal pap. I have always gotten one each year but I think I will stop after this year

Re: Pap every 3 years if normal...
My Dr scoffed at this recommendation and still does one every year. I've never had an abnormal pap and Im 40

Re: Pap every 3 years if normal...
This is correct. The new guidelines say that women only need a pap every 3 years.
Cervical cancer is caused by HPV. Most doctors will use the pap test in conjunction with the test for HPV. If you test negative for HPV, there is no reason to get a pap every year because of the theory that cervical cancer develops extremely slowly. If you have a negative pap, there is nothing present that will cause you to develop HPV.
I was also told that the HPV test is a better test than the pap alone. If you test positive for HPV, they will give you a pap every year or even every 6 months.
