If I understand correctly, I think some fo you are misunderstanding, its not that a dr from her practice, who was not her primary delivered her, but that it was the hospital on-call, not someone from her practice at all.

Happened to me too, went to a large practice, saw all of the 6 or so OBs so Id at least have met them by delivery....nope, hospital on call OB delivered me (but told me to wait to push if I could bc she had c-section she had to go do) and I didnt see any of the gazillion Drs from my practice until discharge. I was pissed.....its years later and it still pisses me off when I think about it.

That is also a chance you take though when dealing with a solo practice. I know an OB(almost used him that ONLY delivers scheduled Csections. If you go into labor and need an emergency he won't do it or regular labor...he won't do it. That part didn't sit right with me since yes I would have a csection scheduled but due to my hx I wouldn't make it to that date so bam a stranger. I know of a poster on here who had some serious issues and used him and was hospitalized for a while and barely saw him and dealt with on call docs. That's just how some practices run.

In a group practice (especially a large one), hospital coverage is split. Someone is always delivering & this allows OB to have a life (especially over a weekend). Your OB may also have had a vacation.

With a large group, it is unlikely to see your "own" doc, but you actually are seeing your doc when you see someone from the group.

There are still a few small groups (of 2 or 3) and some OBs who take on fewer patients & deliver their own. Even with small groups, I hit a vacation period my ob was in when I delivered my second.

You can bring it up at your postpartum by saying you missed your on while in hospital.

. But did an ob that you had met before in the practice you are in deliver you or was it a random doctor you never met before not part of the practice ?

For both of my deliveries none of the 3 or 4 doctors in my practice were on so I was delivered by someone from another practice that I had never met. I was not surprised at all bc it was explained to me at my first appointment that for nights and weekends they split the coverage with another practice. I definitely think there should have been better communication from her doctor about what the op should have expected.

I saw my OB both times even though she didn't deliver. It was nice to see her, but I would have been fine seeing a covering doctor.

I'm understanding it differently. By "covering doctor" I think she means someone from the practice that covers for her practice. Not some random hospital doc. Not sure who is correct lol

For example, when I was pregnant with my son, my OB (who was one of 2 in the practice) was on vacation when I went into labor and the other doctor from my practice was also off. So, my son was delivered by an OB from the practice that covers for my OBs office if they are both unavailable. I never saw my OB the whole time in the hospital because she was on vacation. The other doc from my practice was the one who discharged me.

I honestly don't think it is a big deal.

At each birth of my 3 kids I didn't give a rats butt who was helping to get my baby out as long as they were OUT lol!

But I can see where your disappointment comes from, it's a lack of communication if you weren't informed of that doctor's practices in case of not being available.

Re: hospital stay opinion

Why was your OB billing you if he/she had no part at all in the birthing process at the hospital?? Is this customary??

Sounds similar to my OB. He is basically a solo doctor and he is an observant Jew. He is not in the hospital everyday. If you go into labor on Friday night or Saturday they have a 'covering' doctor. They have a letter up in the office about this so it is no surprise. I like the attention during my prenatal visits of having a solo doctor, but obviously it's logistically imposisble for him to be there all the time. I ended up having a planned c-section which he performed. My c-section was on a Wednesday afternoon. I saw him every morning in the hospital except on Saturday morning. There are pros and cons of using a big group practice versus a solo doctor. I feel like either way it is your responsibility to understand their hospital coverage policy before going into labor. I was well aware there was a good chance my regular doctor wouldn't deliver my DS. When I mastitis a week after delivering my son, I had called the on-call number and spoke to the covering doctor. I was just happy to have someone call me back right away. My cousin uses the same doctor and had an emergency c-section on a Saturday afternoon with the on-call doctor.

I go to a practice where I see the MFM's. They are also attendings at SB hospital. I have one that I prefer over the others who I try to make my appointments with if he's available. He happened to be the attending on call when it was time to push which was great but definitely not expected. There were also like 3 other doctors (residents, med students, etc.) as well. He didn't even do anything but observe. It made no difference to me. He was on call one other time when I was recovering and he came by to check on me. In my 5 days at the hospital (3.5 days of induction/labor and 1.5 days in recovery), I only saw him and one of the other MFM's. None of the others. It was mostly residents. Again, made no difference to me.
