Labor classes

The hospital I will be delivering at does not offer labor and delivery classes so my doctor recommended a course in my area. They have a L&D course but it is 6 weeks long. My DH works evenings and weekends and we cannot afford for him to miss 6 days of work.

Does anyone know of a L&D course that is short and sweet?

How necesary is a birth course?

Re: Labor classes

I did not think it was necessary, but VERY helpful of my understanding about what the terminology means, when to go to the hospital, what will happen in the hospital, what happens after the baby is born. Often a tour is included and I found that to be very helpful. I met a lot of people at the class and had the opp to ask a ton of questions- I really couldn't ask my physician.

I don't live in li so I cant reco a class but my friend took a class at North Shore- two half days and loved it. I took the full day class up where I am.

Re: Labor classes

local libraries have birthing ed tapes, I think they are a better use of your time. My labor and delivery class was useless, I wish I had just leisurely watched the videos in my own home.

Re: Labor classes

I didn't take labor classes, because I thought they would be a waste of time and money. I'm glad that I didn't cave and take them, because they would've been useless to me.

Re: Labor classes

I've had quite a few friends tell me that they wished that they had done some sort of lamaze or something because they were entirely unprepared for the pain and everything involved with delivery. my husband and i decided to do it. i am taking them through my doctor's office. i don't know if you have to be a patient with them to take it through them. they are for three weeks, on monday nights, from 7-9pm. there are only 6 couples in each class, so it's small and personal.

i have the phone number for the instructor. she gave it to us incase we had any questions/concerns that we didn't feel comfortable bringing up in class, and also so we can call her if we need her to go with us to the hospital to coach us through. she is really nice and has been coaching and teaching for YEARS. she also said she personally delivered all of her grandchildren. let me know if you want her number. i don't think she would mind, although i can ask her on monday if it's okay.

ThaNKS! If it is not too much trouble I would love to get that number. Is the class in your doctor's office or is it just affliated with your doctor? Where is it located?

Thanks so much for your help!
