how much will taxes increase if.....
we are looking at a house and are weighing two options and just curious if taxes increase more for one option over the other and approx. how much people's taxes increased for similar additions.
option 1 - convert current garage into a living room and add garage to side of house (attached)
option 2 - keep garage where it is and add additional living room to back of house.
the taxes are currently $8900 with star, we want to stay under $10,000 with star. we need another living room for the kids and we need a garage for storage since there is no basement or attic (well a super tiny attic that can hold a bin lol)
town of brookhaven if that matters.

Option 1 or Option 2 wouldn't make much of a difference. You are still increasing the square footage of the home by adding space.
There is a slight difference in the assessment per square foot in the Town of Brookhaven for "livable" space v "non-livable space."
The best thing to do is estimate the square footage of the additional living room or garage space and call the Assessor's office in Brookhaven and ask them. They are extremely helpful there.

If it's 8900 with star, don't count on it staying under 10k. With renovations like that and yearly increase in taxes you won't be under 10k for very long. I would look for something you can live with for the moment, not something you need to expand immediately

It depends on the square footage and whether it's living space or non living space. I think Town of Islip was about an increase of $3.75 a square foot for non living space and roughly $5.00 per square for living space.
