Opinion on renovation
I am having a gate installed across my driveway -- everyone on my block has a 4 ft fence. Two people now have told me i should do a 6 ft fence for privacy. I feel like it doesnt go with the look of the block, and might make ppl feel like we are shutting everyone out. What would you do?
Also, unrelated.... we need to get our front steps completely redone. Has anyone done this recently (Need recommendation), and what is the average cost?
Thanks!!

Opinion on renovation
I think a 6ft fence in the front of the property would look strange - especially if others on the block have a 4ft fence.

That has been my feeling. It just doesnt go with the look of all the other homes and feels like KEEP OUT... which is totally not my style. Thanks

Check the code. You may not be able to even put a 6' fence in front.

Re: Opinion on renovation
I personally would not do that. Most towns do have a 4 foot restriction for fences in the front, but you can always apply for a variance. I was just in a neighborhood in Suffolk (in Hauppauge, Smithtown schools) where many people on the corners had the 6 foot fence. So even though the code was 4 foot, people were able to get permission to go higher given that others in the neighborhood had done the same.
It would be harder to get a variance if it would be out of place in the neighborhood (and neighbors would get notice and have the right to appear/object to the variance).
Why do you want to do it? Do you have a property where most of the useable yard is in the front or side? Do you live on a busy street?

Good point -- i didnt realize that could be an issue. Thanks for the input! I didnt say i necessarily wanted it. I was just told by a few ppl that i should do it. Just to clarify -- the fence would be set back from the street so my car could fit in the driveway and we wouldnt have to open the gate every single time we wanted to pull in. This is not one of those situations where I want the fence all the way down by the curb.

You might not be allowed to put 6 foot that close to the road

Opinion on renovation
Are you looking for the fence to run from your house across the front of the property (ie. to your neighbors yard/inline with your house) and not up the front of your house to the road in front of your house?
Its really up to your preference. Do you need/want the privacy? If not then I would go with the 4 ft fence. If yes and you can get away with the 6ft then I personally would get the 6ft but I like the privacy.

Yes -- it will be in line with the house -- so the entire front yard, beginning of the driveway, etc will all be outside of the fence.

If it is in line with the house, i don't see why you would not do a 6 ft fence. We did that and almost every house in our neighborhood did too. Good thing we did, cause it would have had to change it once we put our pool in!

Ok. I miss understood. If the fence will be at the line of the house then I think it's fine to do a 6ft fence. Most of our neighbors have that and that's what we did also
