Pre-Authorization for Hospital
If you haven't done this, I HIGHLY recommend that you call your insurance company and see if you need to do this. I have Empire Plan and was told during the tour that my OB's office takes care of all of this- NOT TRUE!!! If I didn't call, I would have had to pay a $200 penalty. Thank goodness I called today to double check.

Pre-Authorization for Hospital
Thanks for bringing this up! I remembered receiving a letter from my insurance company very early on in my pregnancy, but I hadn't given it a second thought until you mentioned it. I just went up to my file cabinet and pulled out the pre-authorization later -- I'm good to go!

Pre-Authorization for Hospital
I have NYSHIP and my OB/GYN office had me fill out paperwork at my 9 week appointment, as soon as the pregnancy was confirmed. I got a letter from Empire about 2 weeks later saying I was authorized for a hospital stay for birth of a child. I was confused why it came from Empire, but if you have NYSHIP, that's who our hospital benefits come from. United Healthcare is who our medical benefits come from.

Pre-Authorization for Hospital
My OB's office handled it. I called before I left for my induction and they said I was all good to go! Definitely call and make sure though!

Pre-Authorization for Hospital
Call!! I have NYSHIP and they tried to charge me 50% of my hospital stay because my OBs office did not get prior authorization like they said they would--I trusted that they would call and did not do it myself. When I delivered my daughter I was admitted through the ER and called within 24 hours for authorization. I was told the stay was authorized but was later sent a bill- a very LARGE Bill. I fought it and it was ultimately paid but only because they stated the reason for declining coverage was that they were not informed I was pregnant BUT they had paid out THREE ER visits with the diagnosis of xxx complication of pregnancy. I was lucky I ended up in the ER or I would have had a huge bill on my hands.

Yes -- call your insurance company and tell them you want to check to see if you've received pre-authorization for your hospital stay for childbirth. Chances are, if you had gotten it, you'd have already received a letter from your insurance company stating that. See what the insurance company says -- they might tell you to call your OB office to have them submit the paperwork, or they might contact the office themselves requesting the necessary paperwork.

Hmm. I didn't do anything last time for Aetna. Idk if dr did. But they know I'm pregnant bc they called me with the on staff nurse info and see the bills.

Re: Pre-Authorization for Hospital
So glad you posted this as I just went through the same thing. I actually had a hunch recently that my OB's office never informed my insurance like they said they would... I was on the phone w/ Empire the other day about something else entirely & remembered to ask about it (my OB's office told me they'd taken care of it but I still had never gotten an authorization letter like last time).... well Empire told me they had NOT been informed by my OB's office & that I could do the authorization myself right then over the phone because I needed it, and I did... but if I hadn't, I wonder what kind of penalty I would have gotten!!! UGH, I hate how there are a million little things to take care of & the people who are supposed to take care of it DON'T do it.

Re: Pre-Authorization for Hospital
Yea I just calle to double check. I never got a letter or anything. Also, there's a "Future Moms" program with Empire that you can enroll in. That's the first thing that tipped me off that maybe the insurance company doesn't know I'm pregnant. I'm just glad I found out before I had this kid.

I sent in the pre-auth forms to the hospital myself (that my doc provided) and at the hospital tour (NHUM) the post-natal nurse suggested we all call our insurance and make sure there's nothing else to do and she said no today when I called Aetna.
