Thoughts?

Even my laid back husband was unhappy with this, and he never gets upset about anything Chat Icon

Tonight my 8 yr old son had his first baseball practice at the Pit in Northport at 6:00. If anyone is familiar with this, The whole place is huge and chaotic.

I couldn't find his coach (he never had this coach before) so I called him. We found each other and another dad. The coach was saying he was looking for a field, and the rest of the team wasn't there yet so he was trying to figure out where they were playing, etc.

DS was standing there in a hoody freezing, so I said to the coach and the other dad with his kid there that I was just going to run back to my car and get his other hoody to wear over the one he was in.

I come back to the spot I left DS, and they were gone. I figured they found a place to practice.

And then I see DS just walking by himself carrying all his stuff heading to the parking lot all by himself.

I came over and asked where he was going. He said practice was cancelled.

I was gone literally for 5 minutes. 2 grown men left an 8 year old completely alone there and just left. One is his coach!!!!

I didn't say anything there. I found them in the lot giving the kid his shirt and hat and got the shirt and hat for Cailen. I was very upset and DS kept telling me it was ok, he was fine.

I came home and told DH thinking he would say it was no big deal and he was upset and said I should say something.

I wound up emailing the coach tonight expressing my concerns.

Do you think this was really bad? I have to say it just bothers me so much that 2 adults thought it was ok to just leave a little boy at that huge place. Or is this just man brain in action??? Chat Icon

Re: Thoughts?

Horrible. I would email the league. This is completely unacceptable behavior by the coach. An adult should know better to leave a child in his care alone.

Re: Thoughts?

Yes I would be annoyed at the coach. Did they acknowledge what you said? Did they think you were just talking to your DS telling him you'd be right back?

Totally Unaceptable! My DH coached PAL teams for many years - the coach dosent leave until every child Is picked up. It will be interesting to hear the coaches reply to your email. If you are not comfortable after he responds I e would let the league know.

Totally unacceptable and if it's not in violation of the coaching regulations/training, it should be.

Teachers are legally obligated, in loco parentis, to act in the best interest of a child in the absence of a parent. I would expect that a coach is also LEGALLY and MORALLY obligated to do the same.

This is not OK!!!

I know our kids are of the age that many parents are dropping off at practices, etc. and leaving them in the care of other adults. And don't get me wrong, I know you were only gone for 5 minutes and you had no choice. I never drop off. I'm the only mom who stays at dance class. My dad never did, always volunteered to go on field trips, always drive in the car-pool to and from etc. Years later he confessed he witnessed too many parents not paying attention (decades before smart phones Chat Icon ) and he just didn't entirely trust them.

IMO, it should be reported to the league and that coach should be put on probation. Furthermore, the league needs to remind all coaches of the the proper protocol and remind them of their legal obligation of in loco parentis.

I would be irate. Even if you just left your DS - without telling them where you were going and that you would be right back - they shouldn't have left him alone! I would be furious.

Re: Thoughts?

I think it's completely irresponsible as well and would probably let the league know.

Thoughts?

That is completely unacceptable. I coach 11-14 year olds and would NEVER let any of them out of my sight. Your DS is 8, why would they ever think it was okay to just walk away from him?! I would be livid!

Re: Thoughts?

My husband coaches T-ball, and the league has told all the coaches to remind the parents to never leave a child unattended. Don't even let them walk to the concession stand or bathrooms by themselves. We've had far too many Stranger Danger alerts this year, and we all need to be more on top of our kids. So no, I don't think you or your husband are wrong to be upset.
