Nyc teachers?

Just wondering if anyone can give me info on teaching in nyc and benefits? Love love love my current job but need to get out of working in a non profit setting. Need better pay and benefits. I would specifically be looking into special education and eventually a behavior consult in schools once I finish up my bcba. Any experiences would be great!! :)

I hate to say it but I agree with lilqtny. First of all, it's so difficult to get a job right now. Secondly, the profession is getting battered. The gov'mnt is not very supportive and sadly, many parents are not supportive either.

It's a shame that we are saying that because the job itself is wonderful! I love what I do! But I would say now is not the time. Chat Icon

I disagree. I am not a teacher but speech pathologist. I was also working for a big non-for-profit in NYC, at their school in Brooklyn. I liked my position and loved my co-workers, but couldn't stand the sucky commute after I had my son last June. I started e-mailing speech supervisors and got a position at a great school in a district 75 program in Queens. I love my site and my new co-workers. My salary will go up, there's a pension. I couldn't stay at my old forever. You probably haven't had a raise ever. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. I work primarily with students with Autism.

Thank you for The feedback. I have my teaching licenses almost expiring actually, I did it for a year in a catholic school right out of college and hated the school (mostly due to lack of support). I have been a behavior specialist at a very large non profit but the pay and benefits just aren't cutting it anymore. I would stay in my position forever but with benefits dwindling and no pay increases its looking like not a good option unfortunately. I will definitely take into account everyone's opinions and keep my options open. Thanks again :)

I worked at several non-profits. I teach in a 6:1:1 in NYC's D75. The negatives are I struggle teaching children who have significant needs topics like the Americam Revolution because it aligns to the curriculum we use and the common core standards. I liked the family interactions I had more at my nfp schools as well as my ability to do staff trainings that I really do not get to do now. Positives are one day I will retire, I make more money, and I can be in r physical school building less hours (I just do more work at home or on weekends). Only you know what is best for your situation. If I could make more in a nfp I would go back in a heartbeat. I love my kids that I have now and would not change that for the world. Please feel free to fm me if I can answers anymore questions.

My licenses is expiring also and i have no idea what to do. How did you get into the behavior specialist field? I wish the teaching field wasnt so cramped up right now bc i do love it so much.
