Anyone live by a Wetland?

Looking at a property that has a wetland in the back. Wondering if there are any concerns I should have with that? Mosquitos/pests/overflow/etc?

I have a lake behind my house which is from street runoff. I have only been there one summer. I was most worried about mosquitoes because no matter what I do, I get eaten alive (even thru my jeans and in my house). The mosquitoes don't seem too much worse than they were at my parents house (not near the water). We have had frogs- some end up in the pool especially after a bad storm.
There has never been any flood problems according to my neighbors. My property line is a two foot drop to the lake area and then the water is a good 10-20 feet from the property line.

I do. My house backs on a preserve. I've been here 8 years and never have issues with mosquitoes. Sure, an occasional one or two but it's not stagnate water it moves with the tide so I think that helps as well as the bird population. Have never had overflow even during Sandy but my property slopes slightly to the water. My property is fenced so while we do see raccoon and opossum I've never seen them in my yard but that could be because I have a large dog.

My inlaws live across from a nature preserve. Its on the south shore, so during Sandy they were technically in an evacuation zone, though the water never flooded past the road. They do have horrendous mosquitos and green flies though. They do not have any spraying there due to the preserve. They have to get their yard sprayed (they use a natural company that sprays something garlic based, I believe) consistently to make it even usable in the summer. When you pull into their driveway when there is no breeze, they swarm your car! If you are considering a house, I would try to connect with neighbors to see if this is an issue at all.

We have a wetland in our backyard. We actually own 15 feet past our fence into the wetland - can't build on it and not supposed to go in there. There is also a little stream in that area. Only once has it overflowed into our backyard (about 15-20 feet in, which was still very far from our house). If you plan on doing any construction, you must get a permit not only from the town but the DEC. They have their own rules for what you can and cannot do. The mosquitoes aren't any worse than anywhere else, and we seem to get all types of animals (not sure they come from the wetlands but that's my guess) - garden snakes, raccoons, ducks, possum, turtles, mice, etc. Most don't come near you - they don't bother you.

It's nice not having any neighbors in your backyard - gives you more privacy and quiet.
