spinoff to tree post...
My neighbors tree overhangs into my yard and over my garage. Over the past few years the branches have been getting out of control. They are literally resting on my roof and part of the tree hangs so low that it hits my DH in the head when he walks past. We want to pay a company to have it trimmed back. Is this something we have to alert the other homeowner about before we do it? They are not my neighbor on my side of the street (left or right) -- they are behind us, so we've never met them. Dont even know which house theirs is unless I go around the block to look.

I believe you have the right to trim back any part of a tree that is hanging over your property. You don't need their permission. However, it may be a nice neighborly courtesy, albeit unnecessary, to let them know.

Send a note through the mail? Im not the type to knock on someones door unannounced, especially since they are not my neighbor on my block -- so I have never even seen them before. Just feels weird.

We knocked on their door and had a note handy to leave in their mailbox if no one was home. She called later that day to talk to us about it.

We told the neighbors what we would be doing and needed their permission in the event that the company needed to go on there property. They were very appreciative that I came over and talked to them.

We had the same situation with our neighbor, but needed to have the tree trimmed back. Legally if it hangs on your property, you can trim it without their permission, as per the trimming company. We spoke to the neighbors to keep good efforts and they were fine with it.

We just did this. We didn't notify the neighbor, we just did it. The neighbor is in the back and their backyard looks like the jungle. I think they are older and they never use the backyard so we just figured they probably wouldn't even notice.

I would chat with them first. You never know, they may have been planning on taking the tree down anyway, saving you the cost of trimming. (Probably not, but you never know....)
