WWYD Re: sprinkler guy
I have a sprinkler guy that I pay $55 to turn on my sprinklers. He came last month...turned them on. Rang my bell to tell me a sprinkler head was broken and he fixed it.
2 weeks later I get a bill for $180 with multiple repairs that were done that I wasnt told about. It's bad enough he repaired the sprinkler head AFTER telling me then charging me but I guess it had to be fixed. But there were 3 other repairs listed that I didnt know about.
Would you pay it?? I called to talk to him but we keep missing each other. I think that's bad business to do repairs and then bill the person for them without warning them first.

Re: WWYD Re: sprinkler guy
I would pay for the repairs, because he did the work. But I agree that he should have discussed the repairs with you prior to doing them so you would have known that you would be owing more $$ and consenting to the work. It's sounds like it was a communication -- either miscommunication or (more likely) total lack of communication from the sprinkler guy.
He may have thought that you wanted him to get the system up and running (including make necessary repairs to do so) as part of his turn on service.
But I would just be honest -- if you like the guy and his service overall -- and say that you were surprised to get a bill, because you didn't realize he did other work/repairs. And in the future, you would appreciate that he tell you about the work and discuss what he needs to do BEFORE doing it and billing you for it.

$55 to open a system? All you have to do is turn the water on and the system back on, there really isn't much to do for an opening.

Many people pay for a sprinkler turn on but that is beside the point, the question was what would you do. I would tell him that you want to be told the cost of the repair before you agree to pay for fixing anything

That is reasonable for opening. Just because its "turn the water on" dies not mean its JUST "turn the water on" (no flame by the way mom2alex)
My guy charges $65. He knows my system. He knows where everything is. HAs been doing it for years. So I trust him. I had 3 heads that were broken and the whole bill was like $350. heads are expensive.
Pay the guy for his work. I know you are upset he did the other work without asking. My guess is he saw the problem and fixed it. Think about issues you might have if there WAS a problem he didn't fix, KWIM?
but I agree that you have a right to be upset he just did, charged you, and didn't even explain whet he did. I would have a convo with him. But I would absolutely pay him.

This is my thinking. I'm sorry, but I've learned the hard way to not trust anyone. To me it's shady that he couldn't tell you when he told you about the one head.

I would call and speak to him first just to make sure they did not get your work mixed up with someone else's and bill you by accident. If it is confirmed it was your work I would just ask that you are made more aware of any possible charges before the work was done, but I would then pay it this time.

This. The sprinkler guy I use charges $50 for turn on but he would "flag" the sprinkler heads that were broken/not working and then let you decide if you want to proceed with fixing it/cost.

Assuming you can verify that he did the work and it was needed, I would pay him. If there were things that needed repair, you would have had to have the work done anyway. I wouold be more aggravated if he came and didn't do the work and then I had to call and have him come back
