Dr. Alex Kofinas?

I have been very happy with my RE Dr. Palter, however, I am thinking of getting a 2nd opinion. When trying to get pg with my DD 3 years ago, I did IUI twice and got pg on our 2nd round and had a healthy pregnancy. Now trying for baby #2 and I have had 3 MCs- one that ended after 8 weeks and I needed a D&C, then an ectopic and just recently a chemical. I got pg on my own these last 3 times and now my RE doesn't even want me to try IUI b/c he feels I will miscarry due to advanced maternal age? (I'm 38.) He feels IVF with PGD would be my best option. I have GHI insurance and I have to do 6 IUI cycles before they will even cover IVF @ 75%. So.... I have heard great things about Dr. Alex Kofinas, a perinatologist who specializes in recurrent miscarriage. His brother, Dr. George Kofinas is an RE as well. I am hoping that maybe he can diagnose the reason for my MCs and help keep me pg. I'm just not sure that IVF is my only option and I don't have $15-20,000 to pay out of pocket. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
* Sorry for the long post!

Dr. Alex Kofinas?

This is all my opinion after doing ivf 3x and seeing two different RE's one being Palter who I am now pregnant with and the re that got my true diagnosis.
I don't think a second opinion is bad and may be good for you. Did your obgyn send out your fetus to get tested for your first mc? I don't think any RE is going to tell you exactly what it is if they don't have that info

One Re told me that drs can say they "specialize" in something but what does that mean? Did he go to school for miscarriages..prob not. I would just be careful. I truly think you are in the best hands with Palter and even though he may seem wonky he knows his shit and is not going to make you do something that is of the norm and just because. IUI is very similar to getting pregnant "naturally" bc of the process vs ivf.
I would say go for the second opinion and see what he says and then maybe run it by palter. He's very good at discussing other ideas if you think you may have different info or ideas.
Good luck and sorry about the mc's, none of this is easy.

I don't know about this RE but I also have GHI and if you are over 35 you only have to do 3 IUI's before they will cover IVF. Also if your RE has a valid reason for skipping IUI's they can ask insurance and it might get approved.

I was going to say the same as PP. I have GHI and they waived the IUIs based on a letter from our RE that explained our case and why the IUIs weren't being recommended

Alex Kofinas is a perinatogist with a specialization in repeat losses.

OP, if you have experienced multiple losses, consulting with Alex Kofinas is a very good idea. While they haven't posted yet, many women who have had successful pregnancies after repeat losses were under Kofinas' care.

Re: Dr. Alex Kofinas?

I would def consult with Kofinas. Can't hurt to get another opinion and his job is to keep you pregnant as a perinatologist. You are not having an issue getting pregnant so maybe there is something going on that is causing repeat loss. I'm sorry you are going through all of this :(

I'm so sorry for your losses. I think a consult with kofinas is a good idea. I had no problem wih my first and then 3 mc (one after seeing a heartbeat) when TTC my second. Kofinas runs very thorough testing, unique protocols and monitors you closely when pregnant. I found out I was pregnant again the day I had my appt to go over my test results and #2 is now 8 months old :)

Dr. Kofinas is an amazing man and I think he could help you find answers about your losses. I had 3 losses before the birth of my DS. I did IVF to get pregnant with my DS and then from conception until about 9 weeks, I was told I would also lose that pregnancy. At 9 weeks, I went to see Kofinas for a second opinion and by the end of the appointment he was talking about what hospital I would deliver at! My son turns 2 at the end of July :) I fully credit Dr. Kofinas for getting him here safely and bringing me my true miracle baby. He is nothing short of genius in my opinion. Good luck and feel free to FM me if you have any questions :)

I am one of these women.

I had a nightmare of losses and failed IVF's over a three year span. I lost my tube as a result of an ectopic.

Dr. Alex Kofinas is the reason I am holding my ten day old daughter in my arms. The only reason.

FM me if you want more information, but I can't tell you enough good things about him. He is truly my hero.

Re: Dr. Alex Kofinas?

I just found Dr Kofinas through a frirend, to say that he has given me new hope is an understatement. I was using CWRC before, and though I got pregnant in 2011 with my son (now almost 3) this time around as we try for baby #2 CWRC feels like a back ally way chop shop. They don't care about the WHY, they care about bleeding your insurance.

I went to ser Dr Kofinas and he took tests NO ONE has bothered to do before. I will be working with his brother George Kofinas moving foward with IVF, and just with my initial appointment I am beyond impressed, at how thorough they are. Just from those two appointments I would say speaking to them is definitely worth a try. Just keep in mind that Alexander Kofinas's office only works with out of network insurance.

I have GHI and after 35 its 3 IUIs. The 75% is on the negotiated rate so you don't end up paying a huge fee. The PGS is not covered. I would see Kofinas for sure. Many ladies on here had success with him. He will run a ton of tests and hopefully get to the bottom of your problem. Best of luck.

He's not an RE and does not do IVF. He'll run lots of bloodwork and either try to help you conceive naturally or work up a plan to help you stay pregnant once you've completed IVF with a different doctor.
