Spinoff to Summer Services post..

The Summer Services post got me wondering, since I will probably be facing this issue next year. This year my DS will get summer services through EI (He has an August birthday) and will transition to CPSE in September. Am I supposed to ask his teachers at the beginning of the school year to document his regression for every school break or do they normally do this automatically? Also on the copy of his IEP that I got mailed to me, it said the date of annual review will be approx 6/25/16. Is this the time where I would also discuss getting him summer services for Summer 2016? It just seems really late to me especially if they have limited slots... TIA!

The teachers are supposed to trained to document regression. You should not have to ask them to-they are supposed to be observing as well as teaching.

That date seems late to me- DS's birthday is in October and his meeting is in May. It was my understanding that the meeting can be no earlier than 6 months before the child's birthday. But do not quote me on that because I'm not entirely positive.

Through discussions with other moms in different districts, I have noticed that once a child has services, it is highly likely that they will continue in the summer. Again, it depends on the district. My district gave me a hard time and than there was a staffing change and they have been great.

Also remember that summer is to maintain the skills and prevent regression. It is unlikely that they will add more therapy or services and likely that they will be reduced. For example DS gets speech 3X's a week and OT and PT 3X's as well. They wanted to reduce speech to 2X's a week but we were able to get 3X if we agreed to OT and PT 1X a week.

I agree with a lot of what was posted here.

DS regresses over a 2 day weekend, so for us documenting regression was easy. But the team that works with your child will know how to properly document it for the school.

We had our meeting in March to transition in September (September bday). We had our review in March as well and that covered summer services. In our district they like to do it in age order, starting with the youngest and working up. Just because the paperwork lists a projected date now, does not mean it will not change or be sooner.
Knowing that summer is solely about regression, our school suggested decreasing speech from 3x to 2x/week for the summer, but based on reports the school district kept him at 3x/week.

There are no hard and fast rules. Every district is different with every child. I have a friend whose son gets OT at an office and he will not be receiving service over the summer, but will resume in the fall. I think children in schools get a little bit more consideration for summer services than those that don't go to school - but I could be wrong.

Great thank you both- good to know. My initial CPSE meeting to talk about fall placement was this past April so I think I will call again around then with regards to a meeting instead of waiting for June. Also good to know about the reduction of services. My DS does better on a routine so I know he will need the services but then I hear stories of how these CPSE offices are not very willing to give them to you.

We had our initial meeting in March and the review was the following March. I think it is only 12 months apart anyway.

I could be wrong but I am sort of thinking you may have had an earlier post that you are in Sachem? Is that right?
