Homemade frosting?
Does anyone have a recipe that tastes like the stuff you get in a jar? I love that stupid stuff but hate everything they put in it

Re: Homemade frosting?
For chocolate this one is really good. Haven't found a vanilla I love just yet. And frosting is horrendous all around (so much butter and sugar, etc.) BUT at least it doesnt have artificial coloring or high fructose corn syrup, etc.
Chocolate Frosting:
1/4 cup butter, melted 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
Directions
In a large bowl, beat margarine and cocoa together until combined. Add milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until desired consistency is achieved. Adjust with more milk or confectioners' sugar if necessary.
Very tasty, tastes like good store bought frosting and just as easy.

Re: Homemade frosting?
I make buttercream - 1 box confectionary sugar - 1 stick butter softened first - salt to taste (start with about 1/2 tsp) - 1 tsp vanilla - milk to desired consistency
You have to really whip it for a few minutes at high speed to get the best texture. I have a kitchen aid and use the whipping attachment
If I want it choc I just add cocoa and add a little more milk

This is exactly how I make it, though I just used salted butter instead of adding salt.

Re: Homemade frosting?
I feel like the trick is shortening instead of butter, or half shortening/half butter. I hate using shortening though- it's so greasy. Though, I don't find the frosting greasy at all.
