gifted and talented

Does anyone have any experience with gifted and talented schools or enrichment outside of school for children? We are thinking of sending my daughter to K in district but are exploring other options that might be more suitable after her evaluation has recommended she is qualified for gifted programs. We need advice!

I teach g&t in the city and would absolutely send my own child to a specialized school in elementary if he/she qualified. A lot of gifted programs in public schools are just part time pull out enrichment type programs, or as in the case in most city schools, just accelerated curriculum. A true gifted environment is so much more than that and will ultimately be more engaging/individualized/fulfilling for the student.

I feel that way too just solely basing it on what I read researching. I find that most school districts don't have it and the school she got accepted to is 14,000 yr. so frustrating!

we took our child out of public because of the lack of gifted and talented. and lack of any help to enrich before 3rd grade. are you looking at LISG?

LIU has a gifted program on Saturday mornings starting in K. It is excellent. It is a true gifted program in that it requires a certain IQ score to even apply. That's the only worthwhile one I have found. I go back and forth with whether to pull my DS from public school because of this exact issue. He is now entering 3rd grade and I feel he has really learned next to nothing compared to what he is capable of. School is social time for him really not much else. It does get better as he is getting older but incrementally. I go back and forth with considering LISG. I don't think in the big picture it is the right fit for him and our family despite being clearly the better choice academically.

it depends on the child. my older one goes, and there isn't an option for him. he needs that acceleration. he's just not happy unless he's kept busy, and that set up does keep him busy. my younger one did 2 years of public, and needless to say, we were not happy with it. so we took her out for 2nd grade. but knowing her personality, she would have hated LISG. she doesn't like that hard push, even if she can handle the workload. we sent her to progressive school of long island in merrick. different atmosphere, not technically a gifted school, but they can accommodate gifted kids really well because they can customize based on the child. neither one is perfect, but they do well for the child that goes there, and my kids are happy in school which is all i wanted. i know of kids who came into LISG after K, and some loved it and stayed, some went back to public after a few years. again, i think it depends on the child. if your child is really into playdates and seeing friends after school, LISG will not be a great set up. kids just live all over the place. but if they don't handle boredom in school well, then public could be a real issue.
