Looking for any type of help/support.

I have a close family member with mental illness and it is beyond stressful. She has had it for 30+ years and has been on medication and hospitalized countless times. She has a psychiatrist and therapist that she sees regularly but I do not feel like it is working for her right now. I really want to find her a new psychiatrist, someone that actually cares. Also, if anyone knows of a support group she can attend that would be great. Also I would love to talk to other people that have to care for someone with mental illness for support. Housing is also an issue, she currently lives alone (not on LI) but she wants to move to LI to be closer to me- are there any type of independent housing options for adults with mental illness?

Any type of info about doctors, therapist, support groups, housing etc is greatly appreciated. I want to get her on track and as healthy as she can be, but I feel like no one cares and she needs more support.
I know this is a sensitive topic, so private messages are welcome as well. THANK YOU!

she would benefit from a case manager in order live in a home with support. You would have to contact organizations, like Catholic charities, Lutheran services , concern for independent living in Suffolk, SILO also located in Suffolk

also, contact pilgrim state for the names of support groups.

they offer out patient services, including with housing

Re: X-Post Mental Illness

I also don't know how easy it would be to move her here. LI is already challenged with housing and wait lists for supportive housing. I don't think she would be considered a priority.

What area is she located? Maybe we can help with resources there...

Case management is key though and from what I can see in general, unfortunately the mental health system is a clusterfluck these days.

I also believe many SMI are limited on doctors and clinics for insurance reasons. A lot of clinics have also closed down because they can't afford to operate.

Re: X-Post Mental Illness

P.S. If she meets the criteria for nursing home level of care, she may qualify for a medicaid waiver program which is generally a better level of care IMO. (still would need to be in treatment with doctors and such).

I also have a friend who works for MHA of Nassau and it sounds like they take on new people often.
