Merit-based raises

My team/small dept of 6 is moving into a larger dept and reporting to a new boss. This person is in a very high level position/head of the dept and none of us know him. We will report to him until my old boss' position is filled. New boss said he is giving the same % pay increase to all of us immediately and then come January it would be merit based.

I have gotten 2 raises in my life and only after asking. In another job I got a raise when I had to fill an empty position and accepted more responsibility.

What do you do to get a merit-based pay raise? I don't know the culture of the new dept but it seems like there could be a lot of young people working longer hours. I cannot put extra time in the office in but I could at home.

Just curious what I could do to step up and prove myself?

Merit-based raises

At the company I work for it is not the hours you put in but the quality of your work. I work 8-5 and 3 days I actually leave by 4 to get my son. I still get good raises because my work is always done and my boss does nto have to hear people complaining.

Same here.

In fact, staying late is frowned upon.

I got a merit raise as a surprise around this time last year. I was still pretty new so it never even crossed my mind to ask for it.

I also never complain either. I think its because I came from such a dreadful place, there's nothing here worth complaining about. Chat Icon

At my 2nd year anniversary my boss also wrote me a card and stated she appreciated that I am always forward-thinking and anticipating potential problems to prevent them before they happen.

Re: Merit-based raises

DH gets merit-based salary increases each year just based on his performance. There's not any one thing that he does extra in order to earn that but he is a hard worker so it's nice that his boss notices. Not every boss would.

I can't really speak from personal experience. At my last job they gave me a 4% raise after 3 1/2 years. I had been asking for about a year before it actually came through. But my case in that instance wasn't just the quality of my work (which I knew was good) but it was also about crunching numbers. Insurance was going up every year and the company was not increasing their contribution so my paycheck was literally declining each year. I think that got her attention.
