If you volunteeer in the school, were you background checked?

Just curious. Our district does not do them, which I think is a bit unnerving. Especially since parents can run afterschool clubs.

Catholic school, but yes. You need to be virtus trained as well as have had your background checked in order to volunteer in school or attend class trips.

Yes, they do regular background and fbi background check. We pay $30 every year to be rechecked, unless we do a certain amount of volunteer work the year before. I'm in PA though.

No, but you need to be a paying PTA member. I think the assumption is if you have a kid in the school you are ok

Not to volunteer in school or PTO sponsored activities.

But to be a scout leader I was.

Public school - no check at all. But, to my knowledge the parents are not involved in running any school sponsored after school programs or running anything where they are alone with the kids...
Catholic school - virtus training.
Girl Scout leader - background check.

If you want to be a chaperone of any sort, yes. Just to volunteer at the school but not being in charge or working with students without a teacher immediately present, no.

You have to be a dues paying PTA member, at $50 per child. You must attend a training and consent to a background check. I think they weed out a lot of people with asking them to consent to the check.

They scan everyone's driver's license who comes into my son's school (parents, volunteers, vendors, etc), and check the sex offender registry. But it's not a full background check (not a criminal background check, etc).

I'm a frequent volunteer -- class mom, PTA board member -- we are not vetted in anyway beyond the standard license scan when you enter the school for the first time.

Never had a background check to my knowledge and I spent a lot of time there.

I've never had a background check to chaperone one of my kids trips etc., however, I am a NYS teacher so I'm already in the system.

It's interesting because my church background checks all religious education teachers (volunteers) and requires that there are always two, unmarried adults with the class at all times.

I believe insurance companies require many houses of worship to do background checks since the church sex abuse scandal. No insurance company wants to face having to make such payouts or lawsuits.

Public school - never had a background check and I spend a lot of time at the school interacting with the kids but there is always a parent or two present - I am never on my own with the kids.
