used cribs
Does anybody know what the reason is that it's recommended not to use older cribs? I'm so confused about this. I've heard something about how they're not as safe, but why? I get that newer safety features are developed all the time, but to say that a crib from 4 years ago is no longer SAFE baffles me. So that means my daughter wasn't really safe when SHE used it? If I buy a new one today, in 5 years it will no longer be usable because of better models of the future (meaning is he "really" safe in it today then?) I'm just so confused about it. If the child who used it before was secure inside of it, and it's still in the same condition, wouldn't a child using it today still logically be secure as well?
Do you get what I'm saying? It confuses me a lot. Sometimes I wonder if it's just a scam to get us new moms to buy all new things, or to replace what we've already spent a great deal on years prior. If that's not the case, then what am I missing? Can anybody explain this to me? What's the actual reason they recommend no cribs before 2011?

Is it because of the drop-side cribs? I can't see why a 4-5 year old crib would be unsafe for a new child unless it was a drop-side, in that case, they did deem those unsafe. But other than that, I think its silly.

I didn't think they still made those. Aren't those way older (like 90's/early 2000's)? This one is 4-5 yrs old and a 3-in-1 that transforms into a toddler bed. Me & my husband were discussing if it's still ok to use. Why the heck not? lol.

This is ridiculous.
A 5 year old crib is the same as the ones on sale today (drop sides were gone by then).

You're right - where did you hear that your 5 year old crib was unsafe?? I think it probably is a marketing ploy to get us to buy more! I'd use it. Only reason I am not using my daughter's crib is because I converted hers into a full-sized bed.

As long as it is not drop side and didn't take a beating somehow I'd use it! No need to buy a new one if you have one in good condition. We bought a floor model for pottery barn and saved hundreds. I cleaned it up and inspected it. It's fine. My baby is safe. And I am not concerned in the least.

I'm pretty sure when they say "used cribs" aren't safe, they mean cribs that you buy from strangers because you don't know the history or if there have been recalls.

This and I've also read of the risk of screws or bolts getting lost or misplaced thus jeopardizing the safety of it when it gets rebuilt.

I've actually be hearing a lot about cribs and carseats not being recommended if they're older than 2011. I see it in articles I've randomly opened and read. I'm also on a swap shop website where I keep seeing them say that it's illegal to sell any cribs that are older than 2011 on their site. That all just made me very curious as to why that would possibly be since 2011 is really not that old and the newer cribs we have now are basically the same.
It does make sense about the screws and bolts, but couldn't you just buy new ones if some got lost rather than a whole new crib? And you can easily look up the name of your crib to see if it's been recalled. I can understand a car seat needing to be replaced if it has ever been in an accident and no longer secure. But what kind of accidents can a crib get into to deem it no longer reliable for your child to sleep in?
In many, many ways I feel like it's just a scam by marketing to get us all to keep buying new expensive junk when our older junk would be just as fine. lol.

I may use the crib that DD & my nephew used. It's from 2003 but it's solid wood..the manufacturer still makes it and it's not a drop side. I don't see what's the big deal...
For missing screws and bolts you can always call the manufacturer.

Drop down cribs were still in production as of 7 years ago. My niece had one from pottery barn

Looks like they changed the rules and regulations for crib manufacturers. I don't know. After reading about it, I don't think I'd be comfortable using an older crib.

Eta: changes to requirements were made by the cpsc, not manufacturers so I don't think its a marketing ploy to get people to spend more money.
