Pet owners please help..(please don't move)
Please don't quote.
My family rescued our sweet furbaby 7 years ago.A family member owns a rental property, and the person he was renting too moved out and left a few dogs. The man said to "send them to the pound" and walked away. My family member tried to contact this person multiple times after but after several unreturned phone calls, my family member found new homes for these beautiful dogs.
We took him for his annual shots and a new vet at the practice checked him for a chip, and he has one. We never knew this.
We told the vet the story, and he said that he's our dog now, he's our family. On his papers the vet wrote down the chip number. We are petrified that the vet will call in to the chip company that we have the dog. Can they do this? We are so afraid and are kicking ourselves for going to see about putting the chip in.

We are concerned that maybe this man is settled now and could want the dog back.

He's an a$$hole and doesn't deserve them back.
I wouldn't worry too much. Doesn't sound like he wanted them anymore anyway. Settled or not a good pet owner wouldn't just walk away from their pets and especially would not say send them to the pound.

And you don't think the vet has to report that the dog came in with a chip?

Its been 7 years so I don't think he would expect you to return the dog. I doubt he even bothered to call the company to follow up.

Yikes, I hope it's not reported! Implore him not to. I'd show him pics of the dogs over the years being loved and I'd be tears...hopefully he doesn't.
Worst case scenario if he does: get a lawyer.

I really wouldn't worry. Even if the vet DID call the company to report it (and I don't think he will) I highly doubt this guy wants this dog back 7 years later.
Maybe the vet will call to have the chip linked to you instead? If not, that may be something to look into (not sure how it works).

Maybe the original owner never registered the dog? I thought I read that in some cases the owner had to send in paperwork. If that is the case, the chip company may not even have contact info?

You can have the chip updated. Find out who it is registered with (microchip company). They usually require some type of proof that its your dog (like a notarized letter from your vet that you are the owner, adoption papers from a shelter, etc) and you can have the chip info updated.

I'm pretty sure if you don't register the chip every year (pay the annual fee), the number that comes up will not be connected to the person that had the chip put in. I wouldn't worry - anyone that would abandon animals like that in the first place isn't likely to be worried about them 7 years later

Was the chip registered tothe person who abandoned him-do you know what name was listed? or to someone else?
If it was to the person who abandoned him, I wouldn't worry
