Sort of a fashion Q - spinoff from fur...

DH asked me this Q the other day and I had to stop and think about it. I still don't know...

if companies don't test products on animals, what do they test on, humans?

In vitro testing (human cells in a petri dish or cloned human tissue)

They can use cadavers and human skin leftover from medical procedures for much of the burn/skin penetration tests (rather than testing those corrosive chemicals on live animals Chat Icon)

human volunteer groups

cosmetic companies and the like can also rely on/use materials that have already been tested and proven safe

That's not a terrible idea, but it could probably be considered a form of tourture.

?Question? On products that say "This final product was not tested on animals..." does that mean that getting to the final product meant they tested on animals? Check out any Bath & Body Works stuff... it says it on there.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

the most common form these days is using human tissue in a flask. its simple and non invasive (you can swab skin cells for the agar... and then just put the sample on that).

I work in the industry so have background with this.
Most ingredients in cosmetics have already been tested on animals in the past. Chances are most ingredients in the Bath & Body Works products have indeed been tested on animals before. The final product is not tested on animals. That does not mean that while they were getting to the final product they tested on animals, it means that some (nost) of the individial ingredients used have been tested. If people want to boycott products that have been tested on animals, then they would be boycotting everything

Humans are animals, so using that argument, everything is tested on animals!

A company is not going to launch a product without safety testing being done. There are invitro methods, but that isn't always helpful with regard to sensitivity since everybody is different. A popular test done on humans is HRIPT (human repeated insult patch test) for sensitivity.
