Qualities of people who move up

Is it just me or do you have to be a *****/asshole/arrogant a lot of the time to move up the career ladder? Do all people who "get ahead" like this behave in this manner a lot of the time? Do "nice people" not get ahead as easily?

I am noticing that the people who move up quickly where I work are the don't mess around kind of people but in order to do this they cut other people off, step on toes, not always a team player, Etc.

It's just an observation but wondering if it's actually true lol!

I find in my company that people who move up treat their peers like garbage and yet kiss ass to anyone who is higher. I honestly feel that sometimes it has nothing to do with knowledge or doing a good job.

I think sometimes it's people with more agressive, go-getter personalities and that can be seen as ass kissers, etc. Some people are just geared towards getting ahead while others may do a great job too, and don't. I also tend to think that the people "on the top" have similiar traits to those who want to be there, so they have a personality connection of sorts.
