I'm repeating my mantra on here
And this is not meant to cause a "thing"
Doctors are not G-ds. They don't know everything, and they can make mistakes, or not be aware of new studies/research/etc.
ALWAYS do your own research. READ, READ, READ. YOU MUST BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE.
This is my experience...and the experience of many others I know.
THIS HAS BEEN A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Well, I agree that Dr's aren't the end-all-say-all. But, did something trigger your post?

Re: I'm repeating my mantra on here
Yes, we were talking about it at the IF gtg last night.
Its something I have been saying for a LONG time on here and Infertility...
I think it usually gets lost in threads, so I felt it deserved its own post

Re: I'm repeating my mantra on here
Oh Lisa you KNOW I am with you on this one. If I had listened to my 1st gyn I would be sitting around with my thumb up my azz waiting for a 3rd miscarriage to happen(not to make light of it but honestly this is SO important)
wanted to add--you know how Dr's will tell you miscarriages are normal-it means there were chromosomal problems with the fetus. I have, through research, found that this is true 10-15% of the time not 50 as many Dr's say. Many miscarriages have a cause!

Re: I'm repeating my mantra on here
i agree, research, read everything out there and discuss it with your doctors and if you feel they are not giving you 100% then switch. TTC is such a fun and difficult thing to do. I wish you all lots of If I didn't research my pregnancy condition on my own I wouldn't know how to handle my next pregnancy or what to ask first for next time and this is after seeing 2 specialists, 2 high risk doctors and 3 OB's. nice!

Re: I'm repeating my mantra on here
I agree with you to some extent. However, I think one has to be very particular where they gather their information. I would sooner see people read books and magazines than rely upon the internet as a primary resource.
In my own limited research, during my preliminary stages of TTC, I found websites, on the same topic, that provided conflicting information leaving me confused and sometimes frightened. My doctor was the only one who could clarify what was right for me. Though I am not far into TTC at the current moment, I think I would sooner seek second and third opinions from other physicians if my own OB/GYN was not giving me the answers I seek. Or at least have them confirm or dismiss any information I gathered on my own like other posters have said.

Re: I'm repeating my mantra on here
I have to definitely agree about being proactive and not relying on your doctor with 100% faith. But I have some other thoughts to add. From someone who works in the medical field I have to constantly read lot of updated medical articles and research medical conditions. I find that there is a lot of incorrect and simply misleading information on the web. If you are going to be proactive you need to know your sources - stick to ones closer to New England Journal of Medicine etc.
Also it helps to know your doctor and make sure you see one who not only will listen to you but also knows what they are doing. I can vouch that there are quite a number of really horrible/horrific doctors out there who either are not up on their current medicine or who simply do not know their field.
I had a horrible problem with seeing older doctors who were not up on their recent medicine and so it took a while to get my PCOS diagnosis.
If you feel your doctor is not listening to you get a second opinion. If they say the same thing as the first doctor then you can get a third opinion or reconsider what advice they are giving you.
Remember doctors are human beings not robots and can make mistakes even the best doctors out there make mistakes- which is why it helps to go to the best doctors you can find - hopefully the better they are the fewer mistakes that they make.

Exactly! Doctors can be wrong at times. You have to be your own advocate.
Well Said, LISA.
I think what she is trying to say is do your homework whether it is on the internet or books.
My take on the internet is that I found invaluable information from other girls (including this website but there are other sites out there).
My one regret is that I wished I was more proactive in the beginning.

i agree. of course, i am a little biased because i am a doctor. but in this whole project of ttc, i am also a patient, so i can see both sides. i agree that it's extremely important to be your own advocate, and to do your own research. but not all research sources are created equal, and it's important to go to the most rigorous resources to get the most accurate and up-to-date info (New England Journal is a great choice!). if you have specific issues, you might even ask your doctor to direct you to the relevant literature on the topic - or to provide you with the literature he/she used to answer your question so that you can read more. i personally appreciate it when my patients ask me for my sources - not only are they better informed, but they also begin to trust that i can back up my clinical decisions with the latest evidence.
and if, at the end of the day, you find yourself unsatisfied with the care you've received, it's your right to get a second (or third, or fourth!) opinion.

Re: I'm repeating my mantra on here
I 100% agree.
I learned SOOO much on here, online, reading and researching, that I truly feel I would not have gotten PG if I hadnt, because some of my Dr's were dopes!
If you want to get PG....LEARN HOW. I swear five minutes googling will give you such a great start. Its not rocket science, but I think everyone should understand how it works if they are getting stressed etc.
Being pro-active I feel gets you one step closer to getting PG!
Good luck to all you ladies!

I do get research off the internet but most of it is medical journal articles that have been published online. So, in my case I trust that. For instance I may read something on a chat board, then I will go do my research from "respectable" sources.
