Re: Thanksgiving 2015

Not hosting, dh is working

I usually make sausage stuffing for my family. For inlaws I might make a dessert.

At my parents we have:
Turkey
Stuffing
Turnips
Mashed potatoes
Carrots glazed
String beans almond and no almond
Pearled onions
Butternut squash
Cranberry sauce fresh and canned
Sweet potatoes

Then if more of my siblings come then we have Brussels sprouts, salad, any other vegetable you can name and corn...creamed spinach.

Thanksgiving 2015

I am hosting. So far I'm making:
Turkey
Sausage stuffing
twice baked potatoes
Candied Yams
sauted mushrooms
burnt broccoli
string beans
corn cassarole
parker house rolls
Gravy

For dessert we have pies, cookies and I'll make some fun thanksgiving thing for the kids.

I haven't decided on apps yet. We use to serve lasagna as a first course but have stopped doing that lately because we get so full from that we don't appreciate the turkey!

Re: Thanksgiving 2015

Well my brother and I are fighting over who is cooking. I'll be in my 3rd trimester so I'd rather not, but my food is just better Chat Icon plus he doesn't cater to our other brother who is a vegatarian and it bothers me.

My menu if I end up cooking:

Turkey- stuffed with compound butter
Fried tofu
Turkey gravy from trimmings
Veggie gravy
Sausage and apple stuffing
Sage veggie stuffing
Sweet potato casserole with marshmallows and brown sugar sauce
Either salted baked potatoes or mashed potatoes
Slow roasted asparagus
Creamed spinach
Corn casserole
Homemade biscuits
Homemade cranberry sauce
Slow roasted carrots
Homemade mac n cheese (for kids but everyone always eats lol)

Dessert
Mini pumpkin pies
Apple streusel pie
Usually a fun cake for kids

Its amazing. The traditional version is using canned yams in the syrup and blending that together with some cinnamon and butter and sometimes extra brown sugar and adding the marshmallows on top. My moms version evolved and she used to mix plain sweet potatoes with the canned yams in syrup so it was like a 50/50 ratio and she didn't really like cinnamon, sometimes she used brown sugar and she always added orange juice to lighten it up a bit. and of course the marshmallows. It's delicious and became everyones favorite thing. But It is very sweet and unhealthy, so lately I've been making it with just plain sweet potatoes, unsalted butter, a dash of oj but some water to thin it out, but I do use some cinnamon. Everyone seems to love it just as much. I use the normal sized marshmallows. The big smore ones are no good. And the mini marshmallows work well, but I feel the normal sized ones cook/brown on top the best. There is really no right or wrong way to make sweet potato casserole. Whip up sweet potatoes of your choice, add your flavors, adjust your sweetness level, throw on the marshmallows, bake and serve!!!!

Re: Thanksgiving 2015

This year I'm getting it catered by Kitchen a Bistro. The turkey will be cleaned and seasoned and ready for the oven. Appetizers and dessert are also coming with the package so I'm telling my guests to just bring themselves (although my MIL asked, "Can I still bring my Bloody Mary mix?"Chat Icon)

We're getting:
Assorted cheeses, salumi, marinated vegetables
Turkey
Mashed potatoes
Brussels sprouts with pancetta
Stuffing
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Cornbread
Apple pie
Pecan pie

*I'm going to also make sweet potatoes.

I'm excited for the lack of work I will need to do. My husband works retail and has to go in at 5:00 pm, so it will be a late Thanksgiving lunch.
