504 questions
My son has ADHD. I have been asking forever for an OT eval or screening. After telling me no several times in Kindergarten.....They agreed in first grade. Then the OT got hurt and can't walk down the stairs. So yeah... No screening yet.
Then my son had a second seizure and was diagnosed with a seizure disorder. The school called an offered a 1:1 for health and safety reason. I 100% agree. There is no aide in this classroom and I don't want a 6 year old walking him to the nurse if he feels funny.
So they sent home paperwork for a 504 and temporarily have 2 aides covering him while they set up the meeting. Question 1: When should I start making some noise about getting the meeting going? How long is this process? I want a formal health plan in place and even though we have had Thanksgiving.. I feel it has been too long. I would like a consistent aide. I don't like 2 part time aides. I feel they should get to know him and how he is over the course of the day. Is that unreasonable? They usually only hire aides part time. Question 2: Is it easier for me to get the OT eval now that he has a 504? Should I bring it up at the meeting or before?
I work in special ed as an SLP so I know IEP's.. but, 504's are not something we see in my school. Also, my kids comes with IEP's in place already. We are a special ed school so I don't know a lot about the process of starting and IEP or 504.
TIA

Re: 504 questions
Definitely get the OT eval as part of the 504 process. OT can be a stand alone service on a 504. Also, if he doesn't qualify for direct OT services, push for OT Consult to keep the OT attached to him. Typically The building psych chairs 504s. It shouldn't be hard to schedule, they just need a sub for his teacher. Also many districts only do part time monitors to save $ (no benefits or breaks needed). The district I work for would not grant your request for 1 monitor due to union issues. The union would go ballistic I 1 person got a FT job and everyone else was PT.
