early inductions by choice?
Can you electively have an early induction at around 37-38 weeks? A coworker mentioned this to me today and said alot of people do that. She said many people are so uncomfortable and just have their drs induce them early... I just always assumed that a dr can't really induce unless it's medically necessary, or if it's past the due date

early inductions by choice?
I am going to say no. I asked my OB if she would induce me early because my DS was measuring really big and she told me no. I have even had friends not be induced even when they went past their due date and were uncomfortable - their OB still made them wait the standard 7-10 days past DD.

I think it would be unethical. 37 weeks isn't even technically considered full term anymore.

A doctor LEGALLY cannot induce electively before 39 weeks, as that is now medically considered full term (even though the baby can be fully developed prior to week 39)
I know someone who was trying to get induced at 38 weeks because she was depressed with severe anxiety due to being pregnant, her OB told her all that they could do was to keep her in the hospital to be monitored, they could not legally induce her, and there was no way they would work around that.

What?? I'm sorry but that's ridiculous- 39 weeks is full term. I think it's kinda effed up to induce your baby less than that for no reason other than you're uncomfortable. I wouldn't trust a doctor or a hospital that would do this.

Re: early inductions by choice?
My dr. said they would consider elective induction at 40 weeks or later if there's no progress (i.e. closed cervix, minimal effacement) and I was really uncomfortable but nothing before that if not medically needed. I asked because I wanted to get my dr. and with an older child, it would have been easier.

Re: early inductions by choice?
Honestly, my water broke on my due date, baby hadn't descended yet. After induction, I never dilated and needed an emergency c-section. Recovery was painful as I labored and had the c. Not sure why anyone would want to be induced when baby isn't ready yet and it's not time.
Motherhood is all about sacrifices. Last 3 weeks of physical discomfort in pregnancy is nothing compared to what we go through the rest of our lives (barring of course legitimate medical concerns)

I agree. Kinda selfish if you ask me. If you think you're "uncomfortable" at the end, wait until you're pushing that baby out while your who-ha is tearing. That makes any "discomfort" during your pregnancy seem like a back massage!

HOW is this not considered medically necessary?? That's just awful.
I wasn't induced, but I was scheduled for an elective c-section at 39 weeks exactly because they couldn't legally do it earlier (not that I wanted it earlier). I ended up going into labor at 38w2d so in the end it didn't matter.

My OB said no -- he said it drastically increases your chance of having a c section.

early inductions by choice?
My OB will induce at 39 weeks if it's your second (or third, fourth, fifth, etc) delivery and you prove to be a good candidate.
They will not induce earlier unless there is a medical reason.
I heard all of the reasons as to why not to induce early when I headed to the hospital in what I thought was labor at 38w1d. The Dr told me I could go home or stay and possibly be induced and the nurse gave me an earful when I stayed (I ended up going into labor on my own that day anyway and I think my 60-something year old Dr knew it was going to happen so that's why he gave me the optino to stay).

My OB would only do it if there is a medical need for it.

Re: early inductions by choice?
we electively induced at 39w with my second DD because she was huge. She was estimating 9lbs 6oz at my 39w appt. She kept gaining weight out control in my 3rd trimester so we knew it was coming. she was born 39w2d and weighed 9lbs 2oz lol. I cant imagine what she would have weighed if I were to have just waited it out.
