Vanishing twin?
I had an ultrasound and there were two sacs. The doctor said it is too early for a heartbeat. I am only 5.3 weeks. He said to come back in a week to see if it is still twins. What are the chances of one disappearing? Had this happened to anyone? One sac did look smaller than the other.

This is actually quite common unfortunately. Of the many years I've been on this board, I've seen this frequently- however don't lose sight of the fact that in MANY MANY cases, those two 5wk sacs turn into beautiful babies! It's really just a matter of waiting longer to see what happens.
We lost a twin at 7 weeks, but the important part is the other sac ended up developing into my perfectly healthy and beautiful DS.

Interesting. Does this mostly happen with IVF babies?

Re: Vanishing twin?
Since the odds of multiples are higher with fertility drugs (since commonly more than one embryo is transfered, etc.) yes it's more common.

No. It happens for all pregnancies. It's just caught more often with IVF/iui due to the close monitoring early on I the pregnancy.

Approx 1 in 10 natural pregnancies start out as twins VERY early, before most women know they are pregnant. With ivf, the chance of multiples raises much higher over natural conception, which makes vanishing twins more common in ivf pregnancies.

Re: Vanishing twin?
Just wanted to say anything can happen and don't be discouraged!
At my first appt there was one sac
At my second (6weeks) there was one hb
At 7 weeks. Two hbs. One was hiding behind the other. (Was smaller)
Hang in there and best of luck!!

Re: Vanishing twin?
Happened to me. Lost Baby B at 9 weeks but Baby A held on and we have a little now. From the beginning, Baby B had a smaller sac so the doctor had a feeling something might happen. You are still early though, hang in there! Sending you

This. I had twins at 4 weeks and at 5 weeks I had just one. I read somewhere that the remaining twin statistically is strong in this case....and mine is about to turn one next month.

Re: Vanishing twin?
Its actually very common especially when your over 30. My SIL had a vanishing twin. She actually thought she totally lost the baby but they realized that there was another baby.
