Meeting pediatrician today
I have an interview with our pediatrician today. Any questions I should ask?

Meeting pediatrician today
I think it depends on your preferences. I'd probably ask about: -office hours / sick visits -- do they see the kid same day? -how many docs in the practice -- will you be able to see the same one every single time for well appts? Are all docs on the same page, or would you get conflicting information from one to the next. -ease of making appts -- hours on weeknights, and do they take well appts on weekends (if you are a working mom this is key) -are they always on call -- can you call with questions in the middle of the night? -vaccinations and how they are spaced -feelings on breast vs bottle feeding -when do they recommend starting solids / taking bottle away -are they quick to recommend EI services if they see a delay -feelings on discipline, potty training I cant think of anything else of the top of my head... but at the end of the day to me their availability is priority to me.

I'm curious about this too. We plan to switch Peds when this baby is born and I have 2 in mind for interviews but have no idea what to ask them!

Re: Meeting pediatrician today
I was thinking about this the other day - do you need to/should you meet with a pediatrician while still pregnant?

you don't need to. I never did and actually didn't even make a call until after my DS was born and I was in the hospital.
IMO you will never know if you like a Dr and the office until you start using them. And you can always change.

Same, we use a different ped for the girls now. But for both I based it off friends recommendations.

Nope. I went based on recommendations. I had nothing to ask him and no time to sit there interviewing him
Like someone else said- you aren't married to this person. If they suck, you switch

Same and I agree. We switched after 2 years because the practice completely changed. They became more corporate and a lot of issues arose.

Meeting pediatrician today
It is definitely not necessary, but for reasons from my previous post (timing, etc) I did. I did not want to fall in love with someone that couldnt work within the schedule I was available.

The doctor will also come check in with you at the hospital if they have privileges. I liked that.

I didn't. I went with one that is near my house.

Meeting pediatrician today
I have personally found that you won't actually know if you genuinely like a doctor or not until after you have your child and start going to the practice for appointments, including emergency appointments. My DD is 1 and we started with one of the two practices that got rave reviews from the moms on my town's local Facebook group. After going to them for 6/7 months, I had some negative interactions with two of the doctors, a misdiagnosis, an unprofessional exchange with the doctor who was responsible for the misdiagnosis after going to a specialist, paperwork that was filled out incorrectly, etc. I switched to the other group that came highly recommended and am a million times happier with them -- its easier to get an appointment, they always get me in, the office staff is highly efficient filling out paperwork, hardly any wait once called into the office, etc. This is all stuff I would have no idea about from an interview. You need to experience it.

Meeting pediatrician today
I met with ours beforehand. I guess I am the minority but I could not imagine not meeting them beforehand. I feel like I had a lot of questions and wanted to be comfortable before starting with them.
How long they have been practicing?
How long have they been in this particular practice?
Where did they go to school?
Why they choose pediatrics over another area of medicine?
Do they have children? How many and ages? - Was important to me that my doctor was also a parent.
Number of doctors in the practice and who will my child see?
Hospitals they are affiliated with?
If my child was admitted to hospital, would they check up on them?
Emergency procedures.
Availability off hours.
Vaccines: scheduling, dosage (3 in 1 shot or 3 individual shots for certain vaccines), how much do they push optional vaccines (i.e., Rotovirus).
Breastfeeding + bf support available
How are infants handled in the waiting room? e.g., Is there a separate sick and well waiting area. I did not want my 1 month old sitting next to a kid with chicken pox in the waiting room.
Ease of scheduling an appointment.
I also wanted to take a look at the office itself. - Did it look and feel clean? - Was parking ok? - Was there a separate sick and non-stick waiting room - Was it hectic, did the staff seem stressed? - Were they friendly? - Did it look like a factory with lots of people in the waiting room?
