Hypothyroidism?

I broke down and cried today at my gyno.

I have gained 30 lbs in the last few years. I eat healthy, some days very little, I run. I'm active. I do yoga.

She sent me to get a blood test for hypothyroidism.

I googled symptoms. It seems I have them all. Anxiety, fatigue, dry skin, itchy eyes, irregular periods....

Anyone have hypothyroidism? Could really use some advice.... Thanks!

It really sucks when your body isnt doing what it should!

I had HyperThyroidism - long story but needed radiation therapy to destroy my thyroid and now I am Hypothyroid.

I never truly had all the symptoms because we knew I would go hypo after the treatment, so I started meds right away. Still gained some weight tho

Recently started seeing a new endo and he wanted to see if he could lower my dose of synthroid (he was sure I didn't even need it - that the radiation left some thyroid function) anyway... He lowered me from 75mcg to 50. I took it for 3 months - #s looked great. He then dropped me to 25.

Well... 5 weeks into the 25 and I had some crazy symptoms

Anxiery
Exhaustion
Swelling (my face was puffy)
My hair falling out in clumps and extra dry
Itchy skin (like bugs walking on me )
Peeling nails
Acne

I went back to him and I went right into hypothyroid.

Back on my 75 now for 3 weeks and I'm just starting to feel a tiny bit better. Energy is coming back, I lost a lb this week and the itchy skin finally stopped (thank god!)

If it is your thyroid , once you have it under control - you'll be feeling good and be able to lose weight

The thyroid can be tricky. But it can be fixed.

Hypothyroidism?

I've been hypo for many, many years. In fact, I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which means my bodies antibodies are attacking my thyroid. I am on 175 mcgr of Synthroid and for me, the symptoms have gotten a little better but are no where near gone. Many people continue to feel all the symptoms stated above for a lifetime. It's very frustrating. Weight it extremely hard to lose, even when your levels are optimal. You can diet and workout for weeks to lose a half a lb.

A lot of people swear by a gluten free diet, but it did nothing to relieve my symptoms. I don't mean to be a downer, but hypothyroidism is difficult thing to live with. I started out on 25 mcgr of Synthroid and my levels have gotten progressively worse through the years.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Re: Hypothyroidism?

i was diagnosed with it about 7 years ago
I am on a daily dose of synthroid which helps
Once we got my dose correct of the meds, i am fine. I do not find it a difficult thing to live with.

Am i tired often, do i have anxiety occasionally...yes. but can i say 100% that it is thyriod related...nope I cannot. I have 2 toddlers I run after and i work full time. It is hard to lose weight...that is the one thing i struggle with and i do believe that is in part bc of the hypothyroidism but I am not overweight

Re: Hypothyroidism?

I have all the symptoms too. Weight gain, Hair thinning and breaking, heavy irregular periods. I'm tired all the time. I just had my Gyno check my thyroid but it came back normal . I then cried because I still feel like something is not right. All my symptoms say Thyroid. But then I looked at my blood work and she did not test the full panel? Has anyone had the full panel done and it show something different? I feel like I'm losing my mind.
I eat right I exercise and cant lose weight.
Please someone tell me that their TSH came back normal but when they had the full panel T3,T4,T&,FREE T4 a thyroid problem showed up?

I'm going to ask my Dr. this week about testing the full panel and see what she says.

Get the full panel! Also have hem check for antibodies as well. When my thyroid first started (as HYPERthyroid) I was suffering for close to 1 year. Dr kept checking my thyroid and it was coming back fine. Full panel and all. And the the last time he checked it, I was so hyperthyroid, he put me on meds to protect my heart and scheduled me for radioactive iodine to destroy it

It's a tricky thing the thyroid.

Thank you because I feel like I'm going crazy. Like I know something is off. I thought maybe I was Anemic too since I know that can cause my hair to break and similar symptoms to the thyroid. But I was not anemic either. So when she told me that it was normal I actually cried. Definitely going to push to have the full panel done now. Thank you so much! Chat Icon

Hypothyroidism?

I know this thread is slightly old but anyone on synthroid and not feeling great needs to switch to armour. It was used for 100 years before they invested synthroid in a lab. It gives you t3 and t4. When I switched it took about 1-2 mos before I realized I felt normal again. It's prescription but not medicine. It's a hormone from a pigs thyroid. I know allllll about hashimotos from years and years if reseach. Pm me with questions.

Also when going for a full thyroid panel insist on antibody testing.

Re: Hypothyroidism?

I just saw this & figured I'd add, maybe offer some help to someone in need.

It took me well over 10 years to get DX (& that's with being married in someone in the medical field who watched my health deteriorate). But I was active, ate well, ran 1/2 marathons, etc, & the standard tests showed I was healthy. It wasn't until my health started declining more, I barely got off the couch, & then I had one of my random fainting/joint pain "episode" occurred, that my dr finally sent me to a rheumatologist. Resulting in Hashimotos. Yet 2 endocrinologist said my levels were normal & wanted me to watch & wait.
I refused to watch my thyroid be destroyed, and that's when I researched and learned about an AIP lifestyle. It basically heals the gut, to repair the damage that is believed to cause autoimmune diseases. It's Paleo (gluten free), but also no eggs, nuts, nightshades, corn, seeds. Within 6 months my energy returned, no more brain fog (& before that I struggled to read my 2nd graders books), less anxiety.
I wasn't 100% though and that's when I began going to an integrative MD. He dug deeper and found I have chronicly high levels of EBV, possibly Lyme too. I'm on a ton of supplements and take Nature Throid. My Hashimotos is controlled, it's the EBV that I'm tackling now.
But there are alternatives to traditional treatments that endocrinologists put people on. If you don't control the inflammation, the symptoms will often never go away & the synthetic thyroid meds will constantly be increased.

Hypothyroidism?

I know this is an old thread but wondering how you are feeling.

I have had this for almost 15 years. It's rough but once regulated, you will feel better Trick is to eat well- there are tons of resources out there that explain what foods you should eat while hypo.

I have been on .075 synthroid now for 15 years. It works well for me. I also take a supplement just for the thyroid. I got it off of Swansonvitamins.com. It really helps with energy levels and such. Has a nice mix of B vitamins which is essential for thyroid health.

I hope you are feeling better since it has been a few months.
