Leaving a tip

A friend told me whenever she charges her meal she also puts the tip for the server on the charge.
How can you be sure the server you want the tip to go to will get the tip? Not all restaurants have scruples and might keep the tip for themselves. I told her to leave the tip in cash. What do others think of this?

Re: Leaving a tip

Most people I know put the tip on the card. It's very common. I never carry cash.
Some business dinners I attend are close to $1000 due to a large party/ expensive restaurants.. Nobody leaves that kind of a tip in cash. Its all done on the card.
Its super common so I would imagine the restaurant has a system of paying out the tips to the servers fairly.

Leaving a tip

I think most people leave tips using their credit cards.

I almost always leave the tip on the card. Usually it's the server that takes the signed receipt at the end, so they know what you left them & what's owed to them.

If the restaurant takes the tip they can be sued. ITs illegal. My DH handled a case where this happened. The owner was taking the tips and the servers sued and got more than what they would have in tips so it is in the restaurants best interest to give the tips.

As a former server I have always received my tips!

DH and I almost always leave a cash tip. This is something DH is very insistent on and he makes sure he has cash for the tip (but he generally cariries cash. I never do)

I waited tables for a long time. The patron leaves the tip on the card, but the server gets it that night. You take it out of the cash you have from cash paying tables or you get it from the bar drawer or manager. Servers dont have to wait for tips, they are given to them at the end of the shift. The only thing servers do not like about credit card tips is you HAVE to claim them with taxes, bc there is a paper trail.

Since I literally NEVER have cash on me I always leave the tip on my card. I never thought about the server not getting paid, I just trust that the restaurant will do the right thing.
