Ductless Mini Splits

We just had an estimator come to our house to give us more information about central air. Long story short, central air will not work in our house so we will need to install ductless mini splits. The cost will run us about $11K.

What are everyone's thoughts on this option? The one negative for me is that they are not very nice to look at, but the huge positive is that I will not longer stick to my leather couches in the summer.

So everyone:

What are the pros/cons to Mini Splits?

Does anyone know how this will affect resale value? Will people look at them and be like - yuck, that is such an eyesore!

I am not sure but we had same issue can not due Central Air. I had two companies over to put a ductless on first floor. We picked one (they are actually putting it in right now!) My mom and some friends have them and they are great! I am not worried about resale really. They are small and think they are better then having nothing!

It wouldn't turn me off.
It looks nicer than a window or wall unit.

We just had 2 installed in our house. They work great and are so silent unlike our old window units which sounded like a jet engine going off. I think they would be a plus for house shoppers.

I think they're a plus compared to wall units/window units. They are a minus compared to central.

My parents have them in their house. I'm not sure why they iddn't put central in. They probably could have. They work great for the particular rooms that they are in and bleed into the adjacent rooms. However, its not as good as complete central air, and to do your whole house including all bedrooms etc, it gets pricey.

It's definitely going to be expensive - $11,000, but ducts will not work in our house so it's either that or window ACs.

i prefer them over CAC because you lose a ton of attic space with CAC because of the ducts

Re: Ductless Mini Splits

they are super energy efficient. better for allergies. and you can control the temp in each room they're in.

win on all counts in my opinion.

Ductless Mini Splits

Thanks everyone!

We got a second (similar) quote yesterday and have our final quote today. Now, we just need to discuss it and bite the bullet. We are always a little gun shy with big purchases - even when we have the money saved!

Just so everyone knows, if we get the AC, it will be a cold summer. We bought a snow blower this year and got no snow in our area!

Ductless Mini Splits

I am in a cape and had these installed last summer. I am not kidding not to be dramatic its life changing! so quiet, efficient, and so easy to control room by room. I was not excited about the large amount of $$ but it is so worth it!!

Re: Ductless Mini Splits

we have slowly (in 3 phases) switched our house over to ductless. we did the basement first thinking we would do central air in the rest of the house. We loved the unit so much and realied all the atttic and closet space we would lose if we did central. We also live in a split and our 3rd bedroom gets super hot in the summer (and cold in the winter) so we would need a zone pretty much just for that room. So ductless maskes much more sense for our home. We can even use it to supplement he heat in our younger sons room cause his rooms is always colder in the winter.

We really love them. soooo quiet, they do a great job and you get used to looking at them, they don't look so bad. Much better than the old wall units! We have 3 outdoor compressors and 5 indoor units total.

They are also much more energy efficient than central since you can control each room separately Chat Icon

Re: Ductless Mini Splits

We had ductless splits installed, and we love them. We have no attic space...so this was our option vs. the window units. We find they are energy efficient, quiet, and would recommend our HVAC guy if needed...
