From admin POV - what happens when you delay resigning
I just thought I would post this because when I was a teacher I never honestly thought about the effects of this.
You can resign your position with an effective date of 9/1/16. This will ensure that you stay on medical through that date. You are entitled to your summer pay no matter what as long as you work through 6/28 so please don't feel like you will lose it if you tell admin that you're leaving. Just resign effective 9/1/16 that's it. Until you resign your salary can't be used for anything else. Not to hire an additional teacher, nothing. So even if someone in your building knew you were leaving it means nothing in terms of replacing you. The rule is 30 days in advance, there's no rule in place against sending that letter earlier with the same effective date.
At this point in the planning process many of the best candidates are locked down for next year. I called 5 people for interviews yesterday- 3 of them already have jobs. Open Market closes on 8/8. 2 days after most people will send in their resignation. 2 days is not enough time to post the vacancy, collect resumes and interview/demo someone who then has to accept your offer. A teacher who resigns at the last possible moment will effectively not only prevent their school from hiring a quality candidate but also prevent someone who is desperately looking to transfer from taking your spot. I hired an ATR the day before school started last year because someone called the day before to let us know they had moved OOS over the summer. That ATR bumped 4 people in seniority. So you run the risk of doing that to your colleagues as well. Remember when you leave the school, presumably for bigger and better things, you are leaving people who thought of you as part of their work family, people who supported you through tough times and cheered with you through successes. Give them the opportunity of getting a colleague who will work hard and can become part of their work family as well. As an AP when I interview a candidate and do a demo lesson I have teachers join me. It's easy to set that up now, not so easy in the middle of summer when people are scattered and enjoying their time off.
I'm not sure if this made sense to anyone or if it will change anyone's mind about resigning ahead of the required 30 days but I figured I would share what it's like from the other side.

thanks for sharing this- I spoke with HR and was assured of the same thing: that i can tell my principal now, and put in place a resignation date of 9/1/16 to hold onto my health benefits and everything else. I still need to iron out a couple more details with my new job, and hand in the full application to them. Once I know for sure that I am locked in for the position, and there is no way I could find out at the last min that I will be jobless, I plan to tell my principal. I am hoping to let her know by the last day of school.
Another huge con to waiting until 30 days before (from a non-tenured teacher's perspective) is that you may not leave on the best note with your principal. Should you ever need to return back to NYC, or whatever district you are resigning from, they may be more willing to help you out. While I am not the biggest fan of my current school, I wouldn't want to leave on bad terms.

Thank you for posting this.
I was in a different school in 2010. The school's principal took a new position, and someone... less popular took over. Close to 1/3 of the staff fled, and there where a bunch that intentionally waited until after Open Market closed to resign. Pickings were slim, and that September was a total $hitshow for those of us that stayed.

Re: From admin POV - what happens when you delay resigning
From a teacher looking for a permanent position for September, this makes my job hunt that much more difficult too. One of the positions I had the demo lesson for last week is for a teacher that he KNOWS is resigning, but she hasn't put her papers in yet, so he can't hire for her spot yet. Its frustrating.
Thanks for posting!
