Sarah Silverman is ‘insanely lucky to be alive’ after spending five days in ICU

Sarah Silverman had a scary brush with death that landed her in the intensive care unit.

The comedienne posted about the experience Wednesday on Facebook.

"I am insanely lucky to be alive. Don't even know why I went to the doctor, it was just a sore throat. But I had a freak case of epiglottitis," she began.

Epiglottitis is a life-threatening illness that occurs when a small cartilage that covers your windpipe swells, blocking the flow of air into the lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic.
In the post, she thanked her doctors and "every technician & orderly" at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles while detailing how she couldn't be put to sleep during the recovery process ("my blood pressure was too low"). Her hands also had to be restrained so she wouldn't pull out her breathing tube.

"When I woke up 5 days later I didn't remember anything. I thanked everyone at the ICU for my life, went home, and then slowly as the opiates faded away, remembered the trauma of the surgery & spent the first two days home kind of free-falling from the meds / lack of meds and the paralyzing realization that nothing matters. Luckily that was followed by the motivating revelation that nothing matters," she wrote.

Silverman, 45, was nursed back to health by her boyfriend, Michael Sheen and "amazing Sissies (blood & otherwise) & friendos, who all coordinated so that there wasn't a moment I was alone."

My boss had this. It was a freak thing. She went to the dr who sent her straight to hospital for. IV antibiotics a few days. Thankfully never got to the breathing tube stage. But she also said , it was a really bad sore throat. Bad enough to bring her to the dr (she hardly ever goes)
