Delivering at Stonybrook?

My last pregnancy I delivered at Good Sam. Any experiences at SB? I am with the midwives if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

I delivered my first DD at good sam and had such a bad experience that I switched doctors to be with one that delivered at Stony Brook. I delivered DD2 and DD3 at Stony Brook and had a good experience both times. The private rooms alone made it a more comfortable experience. The nurses were very prompt and I didn't have any issues.

Both times. Wouldn't go anywhere else. Can't beat the private rooms and the food isn't bad. Send DH to the cafe to get you a s'mores cookie. They're so good lol.

Delivered both my girls there. The first time was a good experience but not perfect. Second time, dd2 was a month early and went straight to the nicu. My experience that time was phenomenal. The care for both myself and dd was amazing and after that I could never imagine going elsewhere.

Delivering at Stonybrook?

I had my twins at SB and it was great. The care by the maternity nurses was amazing. I would not go anywhere else.

I really wanted to like Stony Brook. I'm unsure if I'd go back. I loved that they had private rooms and the NICU was great.

The person who did my epidural was horrible. He took 45 minutes to administer the epidural, he had to redo it a few times, and it still only worked on half my body. They didn't believe me at first. They kept asking which side I could feel. The head of anesthesiology came in and was very rude, she made it seem like it was my fault. And said this never happens. (which now talking to people a lot of people said the epidural didn't work for them).

I ended up having an emergency c section because DS shoulder was stuck in my pelvis. The person who did my spinal was AMAZING!
The labor and delivery nurses were fabulous! They were so sweet.
DS spent 2.5 days in the NICU they were awesome as well. The maternity ward nurses were okay. Lots of people coming in and out.

The only thing that would have me going back is the NICU just in case.

I agree about the anesthesiologists. They were awful. The epi didn't work right away, they kept having to adjust it, and refused to fix it before pushing and I felt everything. My OB kept shoving her hand up my who ha the entire 1 hour 15 min of pushing, "to show me where to bear down". I screamed and cried and begged her to stop doing that, that she was making it a million times worse and every push felt like crowning. She didn't care and just yelled at me to stop yelling from the pain and I had to be silent. Letting the air out decreased the strength of my pushes. I was in full blown panic attack and almost hyperventilating. I begged my DH to help me but he just sat on the couch, stunned into silence. After DS was finally born (just about 9 lbs) the OB had to stitch me up, and she wouldn't use anything to numb me. I told her I could feel it and it really hurt and the epi wasn't working and she said too bad, it will be fast. Fast or not it hurt like hell.

Next day I had a spinal headache. It was horrible, and the pain would only go away when I laid down. They sent anesthesia to see me and they said no, I don't meet the criteria. They wouldn't give me a blood patch to fix the leaking spinal fluid (which causes the headaches). They told me they prefer to take a conservative approach. My friend is a nurse in a different hospital and she said they hospital would have to pay for the blood patch procedure not my insurance since it was a "complication". Also, it would go on that doctor's record as having a complication. They told me to lay down and rest. With a newborn and a 23 month old at home. They recommended i drink lots of caffeine and eat salty food. I hadn't had caffeine in 3 years because of a bladder disease - it causes flare ups. I told them this and they just shrugged and said I could just wait for the pain to subside. I was desperate so I did and ended up in bladder pain for weeks.

With I was discharged late on the 3rd day after birth, and was back in the hospital 3 days later because of the severe pain and my BP was super high. I was dizzy and shaking and they still didn't care. Was in the triage room waiting for an anesthesiologist to come, as promised by every single dr and nurse, but they never came in 6 hours. I had my first pumping sessions in the triage room. They gave me a medication to help and I asked her several times if it was safe for breastfeeding. They nurse said yes. Even left and came back claiming to have asked the doctor. So I took it and DH texted me moments later that it was a category C. So I had to pump and dump, sobbing, for days while it worked out of my system. DS started on formula and I never got my supply back. I'll never forgive stony brook for what they put me through.

After that very bad experience with my OB, I will never go to her again. I canceled my 6 week follow up with her and had a different dr. I just never want to see her again, the thought makes me nervous and I get upset.

The l&d nurses were awesome. A few of the postpartum nurses were amazing and a few were terrible. I'm so glad I'm done having kids.

I have to say the experience with my DD 2 years ago was better.

I delivered with the midwives at Stony Brook. I was induced with Cervidil and then went on to have a med free natural birth. I had great care at SB--no issues at all. Chris Kocis delivered my LO and she was AWESOME.
