Do you tip when taking out food?
If you walked up to a counter, someone wrote your order down, when the food was ready handed it to you & took payment and that was it.
Just having a debate with a friend. I say no, they didn't do a service, wait on you, etc..

No. But I know some people do because my SS works at the take-out counter of a restaurant and he does make some amount in tips almost every night he works

Nope.
But think about it this way - some places (think: bagel store, deli) leave a tip jar on the counter. People will throw their spare change in there, and the workers divide it up. It's a very small thank you for doing a good job. But no, I would never add a gratuity to my payment beyond anything like a tip jar.

No. I feel a bagel place or deli is different because often the person you place the order with also prepares the food. In places like that, I leave money in the tip jar.
If I'm picking up from a restaurant, no, because the chefs don't rely on tips and the cashier isn't doing anything beyond swiping a credit card.

So where I am, lots of places have iPads , so you swipe your card and then the iPad will give you options - 15% tip, 20% tip, 25% tip, no tip. So I walk up to the counter and get a freaking coffee and I have to choose one. I'm not cheap by any means, but come on - it makes you feel so guilty for not tipping. But for counter service at a coffee shop? Seems so unnecessary to me.

Only at the Chinese place or diner. It's $1-2. Been going there forever and the Chinese food lady is so accommodating.

I do - we order lunch a lot at work and with all kinds of special requests.
When I'm home and order takeout, I don't tip unless it was a huge order or they went above and beyond.

They talked about this on Z100 one morning...so many servers called in & said how hard it is to pack up take out...that it's more work than being a waiter! They said that they take the calls, put the order in & then pack all the bags. I was surprised at how many people said yes to tipping when they pick up take out.
That being said, I never do lol

I was thinking this also. When I am standing there and they are packing everything up, I kind of feel guilty sometimes paying and walking away.

No. And i don't r see how it's harder to Plainfield then it is to serve a whole table.
Like if we bring it home, we are not asking for more soda (water, beer, whatever) or extra sauce or this isn't the way in want it etc. I may ask for something extra on the side but if I'm already home and it's not there, I'm not going back.
