3D/4D ultrasounds
Are they safe? I've had 6 ultrasounds in the last 12 weeks, I will have the 20 week ultrasound and then weekly monitoring and ultrasounds a starting at 30 weeks with the twins. I really want the 3D ultrasound as this will be my only pregnancy, DH is highly against it saying what if it's harmful all this exposure can't be good. I get where he's coming from 100%, however I did extensive research and find a lot of controversial information just like the Doppler research. Has anyone found info on a 3D ultrasound? Do you feel it's safe? Have you had it done?

I did not and would not do it. They seem too invasive to me. I do worry about the risks. Bad enough I have to get regular ones more frequently.

I'm high risk and go to a MFM every other week for lengthy sonos. Around 24 weeks they will do 3D/4D if the baby is in the right position. I'm 21 weeks and had one at 10 weeks next time I go they will try the 3D/4D if she cooperates. They aren't invasive at all. They do the normal sono then press a button and it switches to 3D/4D. I see Dr. Kofinas and believe me he is a genius when it comes to the care of maternal/fetal care. He wouldn't do anything to harm the baby.

This exactly. At my 20 week anatomy scan they just did it right along with my regular sonogram without asking me or me asking them. They just switched it on the screen to 3D/4D, though at 20 weeks she looked like an alien. They recommend 3D/4Ds closer to 30 weeks. They told me to come back around then but I never did. Honestly, those things creep me out a little.
ETA: The tech explained why it works better later in pregnancy but when she explained it, it sounded like the exact same method they use to get a regular sonogram.

I did it twice and dd is fine. She moved around alot both times, though, and the pictures weren't that great. It's definitely not necessary

At one of my appointments with my twins probably around the 30 week mark the sono tech just turned on the 3d/4d and I really never even thought about if it was bad or not. I figured if it was bad they would never use it in a doctors office.

I did it at 30 weeks also. My doc said they were perfectly safe but they don't do them so I had to go to an outside studio. The place I go to only hires sono techs that work in offices anyway so you're not getting someone who doesn't know what they're doing. It was worth every penny we spent.

Re: 3D/4D ultrasounds
I get growth sonos every few weeks because of my SUA. At my last sono (28 weeks) she just switched to the 3d screen for a couple minutes after she had checked everything. She took a fantastic 3d pic of the baby's face for me, and then switched it off. It was nothing, I noticed no difference at all. I had a couple done with DS too (was also high risk) and I didn't notice any difference from a regular ultrasound.

Thank you for all the feed back!!! I am going to speak to my doctor with DH at our 16 week appointment about scheduling one. I am still for it based on the feedback here and what I have been able to find online I found a place I would like to go to- Womb Pics in Bohemia- has anyone been or have reviews? I chose them because they have the fetal heart teddy bear package and that got me right there!

Did you already make an appt? I called them last week and the woman who answered said they were no longer in business.

No I didn't but that makes me so sad!!! I was interested in them specifically for that teddy bear package! Back to the drawing board!

There's a very big difference between getting a 3D/4D image from your doctor's office with trained medical professionals, vs getting one at one of these imaging places. Personally, I would avoid those imaging places for a few reasons. Just ask them to do it at your dr appt.

Thanks I'll look into it! My office doesn't do 3D. I don't even hear the heart beats because the ultrasound tech believes Doppler can be harmful?? I think that's how she put it so she measures the heart rates some other way not sure how ?

Your major scans you will likely be sent out for then, and they will have higher tech equipment.. So like I said, I'd wait for that and highly suggest avoiding those other places, regardless of if your doctor recommends the place.

This. I have been going to MFM for sonos every 4 weeks, and now at 26 weeks I have to go every 2 weeks. They're not harmful or invasive in the least bit. And the 3D/4D is a simple flip of a button and they do it almost every time.
