Methodist vs LIJ Katz
Hi all, long time reader first-time poster!
My husband and I live in Brooklyn and are pregnant with our second child! We delivered our first at Methodist in Brooklyn and had a bad experience being stuck in triage without an epidural until I was 7cm due to a lack of L&D rooms. The rest of the experience was fine, however we did have to pay extra for a private room.
So we decided for our second to deliver at LIJ Katz in New Hyde Park because we'd heard good things about the private rooms and overall experience. But we've read a lot of recent reviews about overcrowding, women delivering in the waiting room, staff with bad attitudes, and unkempt rooms.
We're considering switching back to Methodist because of this. Has anyone recently delivered at either? We'd really appreciate hearing about your experience, good or bad.
Thanks!

My bosses wife had the same experience you did but at LIJ - she was on a bed in the hallway waiting for a room for most of her labor. I don't have any personal experience but I've heard a lot about overcrowding because it's the first nice hospital outside the city and everyone from Queens comes out to go there. It's one of the reasons I chose NSUH over LIJ - same health system, new women's hospital wing, less popular.
Eta -- I had a friend deliver two babies at LIJ and she loved it and had no problems whatsoever, so I think it's just a luck of draw kind of thing

Re: Methodist vs LIJ Katz
I delivered at LIJ Katz in 2013, 2015, and again next year (hopefully). I didn't have any issues with overcrowding or attitudes from anyone personally, but I know there are times they have been really overcrowded (such as 9 months after the hurricane!) when they didn't have enough space. Not sure how that compares to other hospitals.

This - I had a friend who delivered at Methodist last year and she had a great experience. You never know what will happen when you go into labor. I chose the hospital based on where my doctors and the pediatrician had privileges. That was important to me. The staff can be who you get during that time too. The nurse I had the first night was bad but then the nurses I had for the remainder of my stay were wonderful

Overcrowding can happen anywhere. Its just a luck thing (or bad luck) if a bunch of people go into labor at the same time it gets crowded or you could get lucky and it be empty.
That would not be part of my decision for a hospital. my biggest decision would be Dr and then look at other things. But then again I would deliver on a street corner if my dr was there!

I delivered at LIJ in 2013 and it was not crowded at all. HOWEVER, I was recently there a couple weeks ago in L&D and they had women SCREAMING in labor in the waiting area. Then they had them deliver in the triage rooms because there was no room in the L&D rooms. The nurse told me that the entire month of August is always like that (holiday babies) but usually starts to die down a bit. I'm hoping by December overcrowding is not an issue anymore (when we have #2).

Re: Methodist vs LIJ Katz
I delivered and LIJ Katz last year in May. I did labor primarily in triage - which was a private room anyway - but that's because I went from 4cm to 9cm in under an hour. They broke my water in triage and rolled me into L&D!
The nurses were great and the private room was amazing. Having delivered my first at NYU and had a teeny tiny room for 2 patients, LIJ Katz was like a 5 star hotel!

I was at NSUH but it was nice and empty for my December baby!

Re: Methodist vs LIJ Katz
I delivered at LIJ in 2013 and planning on again in 2017. It wasn't very busy and I had no problem getting a room. Hearing about this overcrowding business is making me a little nervous. I hope it's not that way in February

I had my son there last Nov. and it was fine. I was a scheduled c-section though. The staff was very nice, they only thing I had trouble with was they gave my BF baby formula one night while he was in the nursery so I could sleep for a few hours and then didn't tell me until I called them out on it after he spit up everywhere. They don't give you pacifiers anymore so if you are planning on using one bring your own and the food is DISGUSTING! I mean realy really bad!
