ABC Cocina is great - about a 15 min walk/10 min by car though. Not sure if that's too far for you to consider.

Re: great midtown restaurants
Great restaurants and close to msg is an oxymoron. Lol. Most restaurants in the immediate area are decent but not great

Re: great midtown restaurants
Cafe Lugo is across from MSG on 33rd Street. It's pretty good - we do company lunches there sometimes. It can get loud, though.
Stella 34 in Macy's is also pretty good.
Friedman's on 31st.
Casa Nonna if you want to hike to 38th between 8th and 9th.
Like Nell said, there isn't anything GREAT in the area. But these are some pretty good options.

The Blarney Rock Pub is right near Penn and actually has very good food if you don't mind a pub atmosphere.

L'Amico in the Eventi hotel is great. 6th avenue between 29th and 30th (closer to 30th).
ETA - Niles in the Affinia Hotel is good as well. 7th Ave between 30th and 31st
